Little Creek Mesa

It is the sister trail of gooseberry, another great trail made by the trail gods also know as Mike and Morgan Harris, not Dean Williamson. My wife like to ride this trail, but not gooseberry, a lot more slick rock compared to goose.

Trail Directions
Go to hurricane, head south on the 89 to colorado city, go pass apple valley (texaco gas station-little creek gas station) go about 2 mile and make a right before the left turn to gooseberry. Follow the dirt road and drive towards the dug out pit, then drive towards the radio tower. So in order to get there you will make a right and pass the dug out, and stay on the dirt road and then another right to go to the radio tower, the loop around the tower and make another right and head down the road. you will find some stack rocks and the road side, make a right and drive up and park, get your bike go pass the fence and ride. Check the site again, I'll be going this week and i'll try to have milelage for anyone on the turns.

Summary:
Little Creek Mesa is spectacular. I rode it with a friend who is a local of St. George so finding the area and trail route were not an issue. Had I been by myself it would probably be moderately difficult to do both. I was there in a heat wave of later June 2008 and it was 100 degrees in Zion and we started this ride at 2pm. This mesa remains cooler than lower elevations, even cooler than Gooseberry and riding is nice even with these conditions. Awesome riding with winding singletrack thru low pine forest and slickrock. A mix of terrain, but more rock than singletrack on great soil. Moderate difficulty and seemed to be a more consistant skill level than say Gooseberry where there a shorter sections of a given skill level. Rode some 12 or 14 mile loop and technically stellar and great overlooks to the valleys below and mtns beyond. I rode a Superfly 29" hardtail and it was fantastic. Had I not been traveling with one bike for all conditions I would probably ride a 4" dualie for Little Creek for the comfort factor in whatever wheel size. I will give the 29" wheel a big kudos for rolling over and down all the terrain without any endos. Go for this one for sure! Props to the trail builders for creating and marking this dreamy loop in the sky.

Recommended Route:
Little Creek Mesa

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Gooseberry Mesa from campground in Zion via Grafton Road.

Summary:
This is an awesome trail that is sureal. Your skills, stamina and nerves will be tested. Make sure to bring plenty of food, water and essentail supplies because you are in the middle of nowhere. However, do not ride this trail without a guide unless you are very knowledgable and familar with the trail. It is very easy to get confused and lost. We were very fortunate to have Morgan Harris, on of the "founders" of the trail as our guide. What a great guy! He is extremely knowledgable, personable and a great rider, though he is 62 years old. Don't let his looks and age fool you, he can out ride most anyone. If you get a chance or opportunity to ride this trail right, don't pass it up.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Goosberry Mesa, North and South Rims.

Summary:
Do NOT go to Colorado City from Hurricane, if you do you passed the trail access. You need good maps to find this place.
The trail can be hard to follow as the cairns are the same sandstone as the landscape so hard to spot. Be sure to look for an old, vine encased corral and turn right there on the road to the trail head.
This trail is major fun and has a very different feel from Gooseberry, with it's easy to follow painted dots. Just ride out and jam around as you get a feel for the routes. Bring a compass or GPS, you will get confused.

Recommended Route:
Follow the cairns out then get some speed as you figure out the place. As there's sandstone everywhere it is a big playground. There are several different trails.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Gooseberry Mesa, Rainbow Rim Trail, East Rim Trail(AZ Trail)

Summary:
A MUST-ride if you are in the area. Like Gooseberry Mesa but with several fast sections of single track which breaks up the constant slow, technical rock sections like you have at Gooseberry. A great mix of all the fun stuff that Southern Utah has to offer: Scenery, exposure, fast single-track, technical slick rock, epic amounts of riding.

Very easy to get lost on the trail (i.e. ride the same loop over and over) and as easy to get lost getting to the trail head. Stop by a local bike shop and ask for driving directions on top of what you already get from the trail reviews. GPS + a good map (vs. the low resolution ones that you can download) are a must on the trails. Not marked as well as Gooseberry Mesa.

Bring more water and food (like Gel paks) than you would expect to consume. You can spend a lot of time on this trail especially if you get turned around a couple times.
