Hurricane Rim Trail
6 reviews
 4.33 of 5

This trail is a monument to the early Hurricane settlers. The Rim trail follows the Virgin River back to Hurricane. Great historical info and an intermediate trail for all to enjoy.

Trail Directions
The best way to this trail is by riding the J.E.M. from the top. After you cross the dirt road 1/2 way down the J.E.M. you will come to a semi-dry to dry cow watering pond. Approx. 1/2 a mile past the pond start looking for a dirt road. It should be the second one after the pond. Look to your left and you can see a tall sign in the distance. ride to the sign and follow the route. If you park on the road to Lake Powell by the cellular antennas 1/2 way up the hill out of Hurricane you can ride from here. I would suggest parking at the trail head for the J.E.M. and riding the trail to the antennas. You can ride dirt roads or the highway back to the car. Find Jarod at Bicycles Unlimited for more info. 435-673-4492, HE DA MAN.

Summary:
Out of all the trails I did in the St George area,I liked this one the best.No real steep climbs and even though it's about 21 miles you can do it in just about 2 hours.I hadn't read any reviews on it,but the guy at Red Rock recommended JEM, and gave me a booklet of the local rides.I read where you could make a loop of the Hurricane /JEM trails and off I went.not expecting to much.I loved it! You could pick up as much speed as you could pedel and nothing very techy on the climbing.Just plain fun.I did go down once as I was looking at the Virgin River and went off trail, that was not fun.I got a little to close to the side for my liking.I just didn't realize how close I was to the edge at that point.I motored thru and had a blast.I met some other riders from Alabama who were also doing this for their first time and I rode with them for a while, but I was being pushed for time, so I wished them a good ride and finished up the ride. Not really anything technical, but there is just something about the trail that really appealed to me. I will be back and do this one again.I liked it better then Gooseberry.

Summary:
This trail is great if you do it as part of the 21 mile loop from the hurrican trailhead and take the dirt road the Gould Rim Trail and loop over to JEM and on down. GREAT LOOP! My rating is for the whole loop, not just for this trail.

Recommended Route:
Follow the next guys instructions below me.

Summary:
What a nice loop! Start from the trailhead up the road a half mile or so out of Hurricane, backtrack downhill a few hundred yards and take the steep dirt road left. The climb up to where Goulds begins is uglier than a bulldog's hiney, with all the desert trailer trash and cow flops, but once you get on the singletrack it will be soon forgotten. Gould's Rim is a great ride, not too bumpy, and full of whoopdedoos once you pass the corral. JEM trail is a speed bomber across the flats once you descend a fun but short ridgeline and clear an eroded switchback or two. There are many dirt road crossings but signs keep the route obvious. Fun cruising! Hurricane Rim is lots of fun but bumpier than beginners would like in a few places. It also has more uphill in it than one would expect but it is a grand route overall and the builders should be commended. This 21.5 mile loop is a great winter ride but I would avoid it in summer as there is zero shade and no water. It took 2.5 hours of relaxed riding to close the loop on my first and only ride, so it is not an all day ride by any means. I'd do this twice in a day without reservation if I had time...surprising how much of this route is on top of rough limestone and not sandstone. Still, I like it better than the granite sands we get in Colorado Springs.

Summary:
Gould-Jem-Hurricane! What a nice loop! It goes pretty fast, so if you are looking for a full day, add something else. We rode Slickrock swamp afterwards which made for a perfect 'big-dog' day. Hurricane is cool. It has it's own flavor that is quite unique. Reminded me of riding across the Scottish Moors and hinderlands. The loop may lack the epicness of Gooseberry or the Grandeur of the 'Swamp', but it is great singletrack, interesting, fast and fun, with the occasional problem thrown in to keep you honest.

Recommended Route:
start in the main parking lot, about 1 mile out of Hurricane. Ride back down the road, less than 1/4 mile and turn right, onto Gould's trail. Follow this uphill, to the start of the Jem trail. Ride Jem to the East intersection with the Hurricane trail. Turn left onto Hurricane and back to the Parking lot. As described, this is a 21.3 mile loop.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Little creek mesa, Gooseberry, Slickrock Swamp
