Black Forest @ Park City

Awesome single-track that has everything. There are pine and aspen groves, upper-elevation meadows way-tough technical docents, switchbacks, and a lot of obstacles (roots, rocks, & water) on the track.

Trail Directions
Start on Main Street in PC and head east, peddling up the hill to the drawn cable keeping out cars (0.6 miles). Continue on the gravel road; go right around the water tank (1.1 miles), and straight up the double track until it converges with Tour de Suds (1.7 m). Follow Tour de Suds for the next 3 miles, until coming to a three-way fork at the top of the assent. Enter Black Forest by taking the lower trail, looping back to the southwest. This will take you back into the mountain at grade with your summit. Later, you will transverse the mountain face, parallel to your route up, except 1000 feet higher. Complete the loop by descending through Black Forest on any of the trails that converge back on Park City.

Summary:
This is only one of many (and there growing) number of great trails in Park City. I love this trail because it gets less sun, and less usage than some of the other great trails in Park City. There is so much single track that makes you work, that this is a gem. I can really get on a roll and fly. that is why (if tou can find it) this one is truely special. Park city is a must for advanced riders. Tour de suds, spiro, Johns trail, T&G, new spin cycle (old was even better), 8000 ft. trail (conects PCMR to the Canyons resort) are all just as good, and not on this list.I could list three dozen more but why don't you check it out for yourself.

Recommended Route:
Park at the Wasatch Brew pub and take any number of trails from there.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Ridge ride (great western trail), all trails listed in my review. Some great loops in Dutch canyon, just off River Road on the way to Midway, Utah(15 min. from P.C.).

Summary:
The trail system here is excellent. Hardpack, occasionally with powder is the rule, and often you'll find big roots and jagged rocks. Climbs are steep if you aren't properly conditioned. Stay away from far DV trails, as they're lift accessable, and thus rutted out severely as they are ridden by people who don't know how to brake properly. Climb for about ten minutes, and you'll likely see one or two people per hour if that.

Recommended Route:
Hard to say. There are a LOT of trails here. The trail that is technically named Black Forest is difficult to find. Your best bet for riding PC/DV is to pick up a trail map at one of the local shops--Cole, Jan's, White Pine all carry them free of charge.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
My favorite trail is Ore Cart to Shovel, which starts at the top of the tailings at the 3-chair Deer Valley base closest to PCMR. The Ridge trail is fun, but should only be ridden by real men (and women, of course) who can make it up the Thanes climb. Unfortunately, if you go on the weekend you'll see lots of "weekend warriors" sporting Levis and beer guts. If you're a downhiller, try the NORBA pro course. You can't access it by the lift service though.
