Ridden Trail: Every few months

Cross Country Rider Summary: This trail system is very well maintained and has very good markings as long as you pick up a map. It's a good piece of well-rolling singletrack with a few good jumps. The hill climbs aren't too difficult and the lack of roots and rocks in the trail keep your speed and cardio level up. There is a lot of trail for a small space. Recommended Route: Start at the silo and ride the Big Loop Trail (denoted "BLT"). Be sure to hit the jumps close to the trailhead a few times. Other recommended trails in the same area: If you travel east about 2 hours, you can ride at Haw Ridge Park in Oak Ridge, TN. These are some of the best in the Southeast. I've also heard a lot of good things about Hamilton Creek, although I've never been there.

Weekend Warrior Summary: I've been out to all the trails around Nashville but I always come back to Lock 4. Lock 4 is not the most challenging trail but I do believe it is the most fun. The trail is extremely fast and smooth. The best part about it is that there are very few "switch-backs" which keeps the trail from getting boring. As far as inclines, they are typically located at the end of each trail making the majority a downhill speedway. Some of the trails run along the bank of Old Hickory Lake making the scenery fantastic.
Lock 4 is great for all levels of riders. The beginners can take it slow and still have fun while advanced riders see the technical side by speeding up. The only thing that I find disappointing is the lack of obstacles throughout the trails. Other that that, Lock 4 is a great all around trail and I would highly recommend it for any rider.

Weekend Warrior Summary: Was up in Murfreesboro for the Hoiday weekend. Haven't ridden outside of Florida in about 13 years. I figured it was about time I fixed that
discrepancy. So we headed out to Lock 4 on May 27 at about 2 pm. We
parked at the old silo. Not a car in the lot. After fixing the gratuitous pre-ride flat that was fine all morning during the massive tune-up session, we hit the trail.
We, my 2 brothers-in-law and myself had a blast. The trail is fast and
easy. A few play areas that beg to be ridden over and over, especially
the table top jump near the beginning. I was afraid that with the temps being in the high 80's it may be a little warm but having all of the shade trees and water on 3 sides of the peninsula made it perfect while riding. This is some super groomed singletrack with a few tech spots and switchbacks thrown in to keep you honest. The trail is pretty well laid out but we did miss one section since we didn't have a map. We still managed to get about 8 or 9 miles in by re-riding the front section a few times.
The trail was a nice change from my local 6 mile trail that consists of 3 miles of sugar sand right now since the timber harvesting in March and the lack of rain for 3 months. I can't believe we haven't had any rain since the harvest here in Florida. Anyway, next time I'm in town I will head out here again as well as H.C.
Recommended Route: Keep taking right turns for the most part. We missed one section that crosses the road. Maybe a map at the trailhead kiosk would help first-timers like me. The next time around though I will catch all of it.

Weekend Warrior Summary: Lock 4 is extremely cool. If you ride fast, it becomes technically challenging. If you take it easy, the trail is pretty easy. It's a large series of several smaller trails all linked together. After riding Hamilton Creek this trail is a breeze technically. Don't let that chase you away, it's still extremely fun to ride, with lots of climbs, curves, long descents, great lake views, and plenty of cardio work!
If you're not careful you may double-back onto some trails you've already ridden. This trail is seriuosly worth the drive from Nashville (about 30 miles) if you're thinking about it. There are pictures and more info at www.nashvillemountainbike.com Recommended Route: I was told to stay right and you'll be able to ride the whole trail. I tried, and it seemed to work fine. Even if you get lost, you'll just double ride a section.
