Chilhowee Trail Complex

This is an interconnecting network of trails. There are trails for all skill levels once you have made the climb up from the trailhead (or as accessed from the campground). The initial climb is fairly long (about 2 miles) and is aerobically challenging since it gains about 1200 feet of altitude in that distance to just over 2000 feet. The highest point in the system is close to 2200 feet, and the trailhead is at under 850. There are sections that are extremely challenging, steep, technical etc. There are also trails that are little more than smooth dirt roads.

Summary:
I love the DH on Clemmer. I have always kayaked the ocoee, and never knew i was passing by one of the best MTB trail systems around. Now me, and a few others that took up biking have been Downhilling and freeriding all over the SE to get our kicks. Clear Creek trail has a little uphill on the top, then it gets rocky & really steep. Deffinetly one of the best trails around. Clemmer is great, a little rocky at the top of the DH run, then it turns into a wide gravel road that my computer clocked me doing 41 mph on. Me and some other thrill seekers love to air out long sections at the bottom using the dirt humps, or woop-t-doos. If your looking for a fast DH run, just cheat and have your significant other drop you off up top, and pick you up in the parking lot. (Don't laugh, my bikes heavy boys). Next head to Tanasi.

Recommended Route:
Ride up, then DH all the way down either clemmer or Clear Creek.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Thunder Rock Express, Boyd Gap Trail, Raccoon Mountain.

Summary:
Just to add to my review below. Clear Creek has been cleared, at least the dry route has. A fun little trail I had never ridden before last week makes a loop around the lake.

Summary:
I have ridden these trails several times over the last few years. Make sure to get a map. Chattanooga Bike club, www.chattbike.com, has good maps and suggested rides. If you want a challenge, start at the bottom of the mountain in the parking lot just off of highway 30 where it intersects 64. You also avoid paying the $3 fee which you pay at the top. Ride up Clemmer trail. To get to the trail, which passes the parking lot on its way to its end at 64, you have to ride a short connecter which is steep and you may just elect to dismount and scramble up the short, steep hill. Clemmer is smooth and somewhat gravelly up to the flatter top of the mountain. Once up the mountain, prepare yourself for rock gardens, switchbacks, whoop-de-doos, creek crossings, and people. Lots of families hike on Benton Falls trail. Slickrock loop is fun and is connected by an old Forest Service road. Naked Widow Loop is very fast and has nice whoop-de-doos. Azalea is rocky and technical in sections. Clear Creek down past Rimrock trail is very rough, overgrown, and is covered in fallen down trees. Arbitus is basically a dirt road. Clemmer is very fast downhill. All but Clear Creek are in good shape and lots of fun.

Recommended Route:
Clemmer to Slickrock down Naked Widow, up Benton Falls trail to the campground (bathrooms, picnic tables, water, the beach and lake), to Azalea Trail (across upper parking lot), To Arbitus, Clearcreek, to Rimrock, to Clemmer, to Rim extension, and all the way down Clemmer

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Brush Creek and Tanasi, Go to Ocoee Whitewater Center for info.
