Chickasaw Trace

The trail runs clockwise primarily with lots of loops. So from the parking area go right onto the trail and it follows the creek. Shortly after it turns away from the creek the trail splits. Advanced riders should go right and ride the short rocky hill loop. Others can bear left and continue on toward the boat ramp (a mile or so). The singletrack wanders on to the river. Go straight across the road at the boat ramp and ride along the river. This section does a 180 at the end and brings you back up along the river on new twisty singletrack all the way to the boat ramp parking lot. There you go back down the field on a truck path. When you get to the major intersection, go across the gully to the left and follow that loop around the field (in the woods). When you come back across the gully take the trail marked "Woodland". From this point on it is fairly easy to stay on the main trail. If anyone is beat at this point then shortcut back, because the hard stuff is just beginning. A few miles later is another split down in the "Blackfoot" or "Blackhill" section - go left (down) for the full loop. When the trail comes back out to the road, there are two trails going back to the parking area. The straight across one has eroded and been rock-filled (you can still ride it) go to the right 20-30 yards and you'll find the new diagonal cut back to the car. The race route is 9 miles (with added road and field riding, blah), so this one should be 7-8 miles of 95% singletrack.

Summary:
This trail is the best trail I have ridden. It has a variety of fast/flat, hill challenges and technical fun. It has some awesome scenic parts where you ride on the edge of a creek, a river and a ravine. The Adopt-A-Trail thing that the Columbia Cycling Club is using apparently works, because the trails stay trimmed year round. There are no park closings unless it floods. I travel 300 miles to come to the races conducted at these trails because the races are the greatest anywhere. I love camping for free on site (at races).

Summary:
I picked up two mtn bikes this summer to see if my daughter and I would want to get into trail riding. We've ridden some small trails at Lock 4, the perimeter trails at Bowie State Park in Fairview, and Montgomery Bell.

Chickasaw, the entire loop, was by far the most challenging. The downhills and three scary drops were way cool. I ended up having to skip part of the Black Hills trail, but my daughter finished the entire loop.

This is a beautiful and fun run. You can cut it short in many ways which I think makes this trail awesome. I'm going back as often as I can.

Recommended Route:
Don't miss any of it, but if you have to, you may want to cut out the Trail of Tears and Black Hills routes. The map I have shows cut outs in dashed lines. Try to build up to being able to take the entire route. Its worth the pain.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
I don't know a lot about Lock 4, but what we rode was fun. The perimeter loop at Bowie is fun and a little technical. The beginner loop at Montgomery Bell is pretty awesome. It was a little intimidating the first time where we took the beginner white trail starting to the right.

my ratings on the left are based on six rides on four different trails.

Summary:
I raced in the Chickasaw Trace Classic and really enjoyed the course. it doesn't present any significant technical challenges, but the climbs in trail of tears and, to a lesser degree, black hills make up for it. the first few miles are a blur, fast, smooth singletrack. the hills in trail of tears are tough, both up and down. the descents are fairly quick, but curvy and bumpy to keep you on your toes. the first few climbs are moderate, but more than enough to wear you down before you get to the longest one. once you survive that one, the black hills section is a peice of cake.

the park was beautiful, central tennesseans should be proud to have such a nice place to ride and relax sitting right there, and free to boot. Much credit to CCC for a great network and a good race too.

Recommended Route:
Ride it all, the route seemed easy to follow.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Haven't ridden others. Down here in florida, Santos and Reddick are fairly similar to some of the terrain at Chickasaw.

Summary:
This was a nice trail. It was very well maitained, and a smooth, fast ride. There were 2 climbs that could pose some difficulty: going up the rocky, and I guess rooty, b/c that was all either of them was. Overall It was a uneventful ride after riding Franklin State Forest two days before.

Recommended Route:
follow the trail.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Franklin State Forest is da bomb

Summary:
This course is ideal! The first 3.5-miles highlight the creek and river that intersect at this park. It is a great place to take the family for a ride. My kids like to stop at the first huge whoop-ti-doo and play in the slab base creek there. After the River Trail the ravine whoop-ti-doo is intimidating, but fun (if you survive). The Trail of Tears is not for the family. It is tough but facsinating in the way that it makes use of the property. The third and final climb makes my heart feel like it is going to come out of my chest on the third big climb. Needing relief at this point it exits the woods and you get a peak at where you are. You could take a shortcut back to the car if needed, but then you would miss the challenge of the Black Hills: This trail is for those who want to challenge their skills with a bike.

I think this trail has everything. It has scenic creek, river and ravine highlights, anaerobic challenges and technical challenges to please anyone.

The Columbia Cycling Club does a great job with the design and maintenance of the trail. Thank you for your service.
