Summary:
This trail is best when dry. Most of the trail is open to horseback riders, and the horses REALLY dig up the trail. In early spring, the trail is usually overgrown. The uphills are hard, but the views and the downhills at the end are worth it. The railroad ties in the trails on the slopes make for some interesting riding. The ride takes about 30-50 minutes depending on skill. The downhills are really fun...there are railroad ties every 10 feet or so; it's like a bunch of mini-jumps. If the weather is wet, your going to be in mud. The most creative name for the trail came from my first visit. A native of the area said he and his friends liked the trail so much they called it "Boner Run" because of the downhill. Overall, it's a decent trail, but gets beat up by horses pretty easily. It gets overgrown easy, and is hard to ride when wet. I'm giving an extra star because this is the trail that got me hooked into biking. Quite a good workout for beginners, enough uphill to keep seasoned vets happy, I guess.

Summary:
Given a choice between a 1.5 hour drive to Sica Hollow or Paul Bunyan (in MN, see review elsewhere) from Fargo, ND, I always choose Paul Bunyan. But Sica Hollow is a nice place to get used to waterbars, fast bumpy descents, and climbing. There are actually very little flat parts of the park. Total elevation gain isn't huge, but it's pretty much all up and down. It's also a great place to go if you have riding partners that prefer horsess, as the area is heavily used by equestrians - so keep an eye out for them at all times. Lots of bird watchers, too. The parking lot has many nice picnic areas, and all trail access begins by climbing. You can head straight up from t he parking lot on the dirt, or head up the road (going west from the parking lot). The first switchback turn in the pavement has a trail access at it's bend, or you can go all the way up the relatively steep road to the top. There are a couple of access point at the top. The stream crossings are nice, and vary in their depth depending on runoff & moisture. They are not very deep (10" max if I remember right). The trails are very wet late into the spring,as snowmelt is slowed by the tree cover. Overall I'd say the trails are fine for an occasional visit, and there definitely aren't many other trails to choose from in the area. The scenery is very nice, and as of the last time I was there, it was free access.

Summary:
Given the terrain of eastern South Dakota, this is bright spot. Although the trails are designed more for the "walker" and "jogger", it offers some fun the technical biker too. If you are creative, there are quite a few steep areas to try out. I found what seemed to be the main trail a little short (maybe a mile), but apparently there is seven more miles somewhere. There is definately room to go exploring, I'll have to go back to try the rest out.
