Prairie Bike Trail (Buffalo Gap National Grasslands)

This trail has a mix of doubletrack, singletrack, and gravel roads. It is over grown in some areas, but you can still make out the trail. Look for the signs as you ride this loop. This is the closest you can get to riding in the Badlands

Trail Directions
Take the Wall exit off of I-90 and head south on the Badlands loop road. Look for a few new houses on the east side of the highway. Just as you pass the last house, which is around a mile from the interstate, look for a faint gravel road next to a billboard. Park here and take the road down. After you take the road down the hill you will see signs with a bike on them.

Summary:
I rode this trail on 4/19/2008. To get ther take I-90 to exit # 110 for Wall. Go south on the Badlands Loop road approximately 1 mile to another dirt road with a street sign called Badlands. Immediately after this dirt road and a Billboard there is another unnamed dirt road that takes you down to the start of the trail. Do not drive your car down the hill unless you have a high clearance vehicle and 4WD.
Now for the trail itself: I would not reccomend riding this trail in its current state. The trail is basically service roads for the Grassland areas but it looks like they have not been used much at all lately and are overgrown. Lots of cactus growing across the trail. At least half of the trail markers were knocked down (Buffalo?). After 5.5 miles you will come across a livestock tank and the trail just disappears. Keep going straight a couple of hundred yards and you will hit a T in the trail. I guess you can go either way. At this point I was on my third flat and started to turn back.
Even though this is very flat, the trail would be pretty cool because of the Badlands scenery and as the first reviewer said, you do ride through some interesting formations. You ride right through a couple of Prairie Dog towns and during my ride I saw Antelope two seperate times. Be prepared with slimed tubeless tires or bring lots of tubes a pump and CO2's.
I am going to write a letter to the Forest Service recomending they either maintain the trail or do not advertise it as a bike trail for the sake of both the Forest Service and less experienced non mechanically oriented riders.

You can get a map of the trail at the Grasslands vistor Center but they are only open M-F 8-4:30 all year long (no weekends!)

Just to summarize: This could be decent trail to get out and ride and see some Badlands scenery but the trail does not appear to be regulary used by trucks or riders, its heavily overgrown with cactus and a lot of the markers are down.

Summary:
Pretty flat, as you might imagine if you know the area. A fair amount of it is essentially crossing cow pasture, so some sections are very bumpy due to cattle tracks made when the ground was soft. There are a few "Badlands" type sections, with a hard-packed surface and some mounds, drops, etc. These spots are real gems and made the long ride worth it. Adrenaline junkies should definitely pass on this trail.

Recommended Route:
Park by the large sign, bomb down the road to the trailhead. It's a loop, so go either way.
