Skyline Drive

Nice technical single track less than a mile from downtown. There are many spurs to this trail as it
winds through a fairly small overall area. There are some steep climbs and technical areas with some nice short fast downhills mixed in. Trail building/maintenance continues. Great little area very very close to town
There are a few different ways to access the trails:
1. From town take Quincy St west to skyline drive and go past Dinosaur Park until just before the first swithback...there is a pullout on the east side of the road..the trail is just through the fence.
2. From the West Blvd area there are two options. From the southern end of West Blvd take St. Patrick street untill it dead ends. There is a fence at the dead end and the trail begins here.
3. From central West Blvd take Franklin Street West up a steep hill that veers South or left. Near the top of the hill the trail is to the left or west in between to driveways that go in opposite directions.
Summary: Mostly poorly developed trails in my opinion. For someone only looking for sheer milage and a good workout, I guess Skyline can provide that. I dont find the trails there to be rewarding in the least. They can be quite herky jerky without any flow. There are too many trails that have been built creating a huge maze with trails paralleling each other. If you want extended, technical, and fun downhills accompanied with strenious climbs, I suggest crossing the gap and doing M-Hill. If you like riding twisty, mostly non-technical, non flowy single track, and want to put in alot of miles then Skyline is for you.
Recommended Route: Ride up from Circle Court and take your pick...

skyline is like the front 9. small acreage with trails that wind throughout. trails vary from rocky to smooth and from steep to no slope
trails wich traverse and connect summits. it took about 1-1/2 hours to do the 8 miles or so trails . there are no signs but you don't need any. some trails deadend into backyards but not a big deal.
great views of DT and RC valley.
i hopped in at end of st. pats street. rode up steep, rocky creek bed to top out at skyline road. little tuff w/o wamrup. might suggest other
starting point.
skyline is a great urban mtn. bike trail system, 100% ST, creeks, hills , glades, winds thru forsest. tuff, aerorbic and challenging in spots.
given that it is 2 blocks from DT , i think it terrific.
there are other trail systems nearby in the DT area which i did not ride. M-Hill, and St. Martins. referring to conversations at a bike shop, ST. Martin is larger (12Mi) than Skyline (8mi)and less rocky, but gains more elevation. M- Hill , based on conversations only, is tuff and aggressive.
there are no maps or signs for all 3.
plans are underway to develop 3 hills into a comprehensive trail system.
highly recommend.
went to several Black Hills trails but still had snow March 20.

Summary: sesupanchick has no idea what she is talking about! enough said. This little network of trails is a Gem for Rapid City. Access is top notch...you can ride about 8 miles of single track only a couple blocks from downtown...It doesn't get much better than that. And if you like M-Hill better, well link both up, heck link up Skyline, M-Hill, and St Martins for an Epic...I do it regularly in the summer. This little gem of an area has everything, even sweet DH/FR lines. The 20' cliff sesupanchick speaks of is an easy 8' drop to smooth tranny that I take regularly. I'll even admit to making it. I have built half the trail up there and am proud of it! Please keep this great place alive and well! Enough with the trail blockage and log laying...If you're guilty shame on you. On the other hand it is about maxed out so no more trail building please. Let's keep Skyline what it is now...Yeah some stuff could go but I know everyone has their favorite lines so tread lightly so we can all get along. Hikers and bikers alike.
Recommended Route: Do it all!
Other recommended trails in the same area: Storm Mt, M-Hill, St Martins, Victoria Lake, Loop 15, The riding in the Black Hills is endless and much underated!

Summary: Great network of trails, with access from both the east(St. Patrick st., St. Cloud, and via Skyline Drive itself) and west side of the hill. I'm not sure what sesupanchick is talking about when she says the trails are in bad shape. I ride there weekly, and I haven't seen the problems she mentions. Besides the main network of trails there are others scattered along the northeast side of the hill and some trails on the west side of Skyline Drive. You can easily ride hard for an hour without riding the same section twice.
Recommended Route: If you want an easy start you can start at the trailhead on St. Cloud St. and ride up the dirt road to the large field. From there trails fan out to the north and west. The trails are pretty well interconnected, so you can just take off and follow whatever route seems cool. There is a tight, semi-technical downhill trail that starts by a birdhouse and follows the valley to where several trails meet on the south end of the trail network (sorry for the weak directions, it's hard to describe).

Summary: A good idea for an area to ride. Unfortunately there's a more established web of trails just across the "GAP" (aka. M-Hill). The trails here are not fully established, over grown with vegetation, and encroaching development has left most trials to a stop, and one to a 20 ft. drop off. I don't recommend you waste your time even trying to locate these trails. Just go to M-Hill, its bigger-n-better...
