Summary:
I stumbled across a couple miles of new trail that was added over the winter. There has always been a great number of game trails leading off of the main trails.Someone, and a local shreader by the name of Judge Judy,(but don't worry shes nothin like the famous judge on TV,this ones cool),have cleared a few new miles of new trail. The trail is a little vague but well marked with ribbon and paint. It is all singletrack leading thru demse forest, nice addition to the existing system of trails. There are a few log crossings.Just do-able and fun to cross.I hope they don't get carried away with the saws.

Recommended Route:
break right at the picnic area, and follow the doubletrack into the forest past the info board and map.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The new trail needs ridden. It is still new and slow due to the leaves and vegetation. The existing trails are fast and fun.Semi-slicks with slime tubes work great here.

Summary:
Being from the Black Hills and used to riding at elevation and enjoying the hills, it was not a technical ride by any means. It does allow you the oppertunity to keep your bike in your high rings and pedal like crazy! Keep in mind you are likely to encounter many hikers on this flat trail, so be catious! There are one or two technical corners in the trees, so watch out for sand in the trees which can throw you off your bike. If passing through Pierre, it's a good ride to get out and get the blood flowing.

Recommended Route:
The route you chose does not matter, going left or right at trial head will give you the same ride.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
There are a couple of short game trails around the dam, that do offer some short climbs.

Ridden Once

Summary:
ride among cottonwoods, russian olives and cedar, or break out and ride along the meadow in the middle of the island. Round trip from my door is 8.4 miles. Fine sand, small hills, deer and turkey. Oasis in the middle of treeless plain, within 2 miles of any point in Pierre.

Recommended Route:
West on Poplar street, across causeway, in through gate, hard left past trees, follow singletrack along lake, then in to cut main trail, left to end of island, then left along river side. Many trails branch off and return. Island trail is a bit technical for sedentary folk, but it's a great walk also, with benches, markers and a viewing deck over a cattail marsh on the river side.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Lewis and Clark trail starts at Farm Island and winds along river, crosses on bridge, and ends up at Oahe Dam 12 miles later. Flat, but if you want to climb there are many bluffs, breaks and buttes with reasonable shoulders on the roads.

Reviewed by: Royce Volker , from Onida, South Dakota

Summary:
This is a fun little trail with no climbs to speak of but has some fairly technical stuff through the trees. The island is small so you can jump on any chunk of single track and have fun and not worry about getting too lost.I reccomend this trail to anyone who is passing through Pierre with a mountain bike.

Recommended Route:
Start at the restrooms and go right towards the river. From there follow it along the edge to the open meadow and just keep going clockways.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
there are some 3 and 4 mile trails out beneath oahe damn at campground number two.
