Harbison State Forest

Hardpack, not very technical. A few good climbs along the gravel road and the "Midlands" trail. Gets very muddy in the winter and may be closed during those times.

Summary:
This is a surprizing collection of loops close to the busy city of harbison. The trails are well marked and are fairly mellow with loops fitting almost any skill level. I start my ride on firebreak east, riding backwards from the parking lot. I start on "L" which is fire break. If you go this way, you will run into a nice downhill section with what i would call rollers, but if your brave (or dumb like me) you can turn these into massive doubles. Its a blast either way. You are running down toward the river (broad) so it is mostly mellow and down hill. Once u make it to "h" be ready for a vicious experience to follow. From "h" the trail bends back around to Spider Woman II. This trail stomped me. It is viscious. It would probably be easier to ride from the opposite entrance, but its a work out no matter what. Spider Woman II is extremely technical. Some sections are fast, but the whole trail is fairly tight and keep you on your toes. There is a rock garden about a third of the way in from the back side. This is a REAL rock garden, not a Carolina version. If you havn't ridden one, be prepared to be challenged. The lines are hard to find and the only way to make it through is with practice. The trail is fun beyond that with the exception of the climbs. They don't switch back up the hill, but instead climb straight up some pretty gnarly grades. It has some wet spots with roots, so keep your momentum. I'm on a full suspension with five and a half inches of travel and i still had some issues with roots and ruts. Very challenging but fun. By the time i'm done with Spider Woman II, im about dead. It will take it out of you for sure, even if it is short. From Spider Woman II, I head towards "D" and then to "Y" which is Fire Break West. This runs back to the main parking area. This is a short ride, but it will put it to you. Other than that, there are some muddy spots if it has rained recently, but its ok since there is a bike wash station. There are bathrooms everywhere and kiosk that all have maps and trail maps as well. Well maintained, and just nice to ride.

Recommended Route:
backwards...L to J, J to H, H to spiderwoman, spiderwoman to R/Q, R/Q to D, D to Y, Y to A and your done

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Long Cane/Parsons Mountain
Lynches Woods
Brickhouse

Summary:
I live in Myrtle Beach and I enjoy getting out of town and riding at Harbison. Their are some technical trails, even though write differently. Spider Woman is the hardest one. If you think it is easy then you must ride for a living. The rock garden is fun, ride in a higher gear to keep your momentum and constant weight on the back. They have recently changed Stewardship trail. I think it may be a little longer. They take care of the trails.

Summary:
The Harbison State Park trails are very well maintained. Good facilities with a bike wash at the entrance. Well marked trails with trail maps available at the entrance. Their is a $5 (01.13.07) car and bike fee or a $25 annual pass. Lots of parking. For a online trail guide check out http://www.state.sc.us/forest/refhartg.htm.

This trail is great for beginners too. Just be sure to grab a trail description and stay off the technical loops.

Recommended Route:
This trail is best ridden clockwise. This allows one to experience the descents on the Firebreak loop and climb the fireroads at the opposite end on the Midlands Mountain loop. The Spider Woman II loop is very challenging with steep climbs and decents with switchbacks thrown in. Lots of off camber portions on this loop.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
FATS.

Summary:
Rode the fire road and the middle mtn trails. Not technical at all, a little sloppy in a few crossings, but mostly just leaf covered. Couple small climbs. All was middle ring, could have rode the big ring some. Good cardio workout. This forest is an urban interface system, and seems well managed. The $5 for fee is OK. Good water at T/H. The system is well marked. The area is clean and littler free. Some old logging roads, some two track and a little single trak.

Recommended Route:
Pick your poison, All are well marked.

Summary:
This trail is "OK" considering that the state of South Carolina IS NOT mountain biker friendly! DO not come to this "Park" looking for any downhill sections longer than 300-500 yards! HOWEVER, you will like this trail system if you are a "Cross County" rider. It is NOT technical unless maybe this is all you know OR you are a road bike rider. For those that have ridden anywhere else in the county or world for that matter & you like to "GO UP" as well as "COME DOWN" you will be disappointed to travel to this "Park". Like I said it is a "Cross County" riders "DREAM PARK"! Also it is NEAR IMPOSSIBLE to do an "EPIC RIDE" here as the park is small & you would have to ride in circles to get in "miles". Funny, I have been riding mountain bikes for over 18 years & I have NEVER seen a "Peloton" on dirt trail like a saw 2 Saturdays ago! heh-heh ...Watch out for the "serious" cross country, "rodie style" of rider that seems to frequest this "Mountain Bike???" Park. I will say that I am learning to love this park as it is the closest to my house & is virtually only one of 4 options within 20 miles of where I live.
