Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Weekend Warrior Summary: This trail is hard to classify. Taken at the right time of day/year it's very scenic and a fun ride. Go there on a baking August afternoon and you'd better bring plenty of bug spray and a prefer your adventure with some suffering. My visit was fortunately the former type - Thanksgiving weekend with low late sun skimming across the estuary. Very sweet ride. These conditions swing this trail from a "3" to a "5", so I gave it a "4".
The mud grates are a little odd. Some of them project well above surrounding grade. Drop a wheel off and you'd be wise to keep riding off until you find a good flush spot to remount.
The bridges are fun and bike-friendly. Be a little cautious on the wet leaves that cover some.
The rooty sections are fun and can be easily cleaned, but you do have to pay attention because a lot of the roots are slippery and run close to parallel with the trail.
Bottom Line: Happen to be in the area? It would be criminal to miss this ride. If you're further away, it's worth a trip to ride Awendaw and check out the connecting Swamp Fox.
Recommended Route: Park and start riding at the Buck Hall Recreation Area, located approximately 30 miles north of Charleston on US 17. The entrance sign to Buck Hall will be on your right past the towns of Awendaw and Pineland. Other recommended trails in the same area: Swamp Fox Passage of the Palmetto Trail. I have not ridden the full length (42 miles one way), so I won't post a review.
