An in and out trail at this time. Around 12 miles total. Technical in places with many quick uphills, downhills, dips and creek crossings. Will work you if you push. Not for a beginner rider. This is one of the more challenging rides in the area. If the bridges are wet, WALK THEM. Very slick. If you ride it, give it a review here so the volunteers who work on it can see what you think.
Take Hwy 221/28 to Modoc, SC (a crossroad). At the intersection with Hwy 23, turn on to Hwy 23 and go @ 1 mile to the trailhead on the left. There is a paved lot prior to crossing Stevens Creek.
Summary: Good trail, technical in parts. The description of the trail from MTB.com says the trail can be slick, believe it! There are a lot of roots, some of them need to be ridden around rather than over because they are slick. A lot of the ditch crossings are over rocks and are very slick as well (I hope over time maybe some of these will get bridges). The trail runs along Stephen's Creek for a good ways, and it is a nice view although it is a big drop from the trail down to the creek.
Recommended Route: In and out trail

Summary: This is my new favorite trail. It's a good mix of challenge, scenery and fun. Seems to be a little less challenging than Wine Creek with it's creek crossings and rocks, but more challenging than the Hickory Knob/Bartram/Lick Fork routes. It's also one of the most straight-forward to get to, since the trailhead is right off Hwy. 23.

Summary: Its been a couple of years since I've rode this trail, but the creek crossings are still as challenging as I remember. Today the weather was perfect with the majority of the leaves on the ground. The view was prodigious from one ridge to the next with Stevens Creek far below. The trail is in very good shape with only a few huge pines down about 4 miles into the ride. Stopped at the painted tree property marking at about the 5.5 mile marker. The trail looks like it goes on but it was a bit over grown and getting late in the day. Next time I'll be prepared for the journey. This trail is well worth the ride from Columbia. Great job SORBA-CSRA...excellent

Summary: SS from North Carolina: You've ridden Pump Station and Modoc - that's all - and you've decided Augusta doesn't have much to offer....? You haven't rode Turkey or Wine Creek? Or Lickfork (not that it's much to write home about)? Hickory Knob? FIRETOWER? What's your specific complaint? Obviously we're not going to have a 10 mile climb in the mountains here (not that that's what *I* want from a ride), but you might consider that you haven't seen everything here (or maybe even everything at Modoc; did you happen across a "detour" with the 45 degree climb..? Going 20 mph on the return downhill alongside 25 foot rocky cliffs isn't "technical" as a 500 foot drop I suppose? For that matter, how fast did you bomb into the start of it out of the parking lot? There's a lot of places in the U.S. that would LOVE to have the variety Augusta has.
Recommended Route: Around the horse poop?

Summary: After riding this trail one time, I cannot quite understand why it is rated as highly as it is on this website. There is no way that this trail is a 4 on a 1-5 scale, with 5 being the best possible score. At most, the trail would be a 3 in my book. It is officially defined as a "hiking trail" by the SCarolina forestry service. That is an apt description. It is better suited for hiking than for riding. Sure, some of the creek crossings are interesting. And the scenery is pretty good. But this trail ain't that great. Since I have given you an honest opinion, I will make a few other observations. Let's face it, there is not exactly an abundance of great mountain biking opportunities in this neck of the woods (Augusta area). I recently relocated from NCarolina, where I could literally drive 3 miles and have access to arguably some of the best single track in the state. Since moving, I have only ridden the so-called pump station trail and Modoc. Neither are even close to what I was able to enjoy in NCarolina. In my mind, the pump station is as good as Modoc, especially when you take the driving distance into consideration. Despite our geographical disadvantages, we are fortunate as mountain bikers to have what we have. At least there is some mountain biking to be had. And I have heard that there really are some great trails around the area. I just haven't found them yet. Someone mentioned "firetower" - any comments on this one? Thanks to SORBA and all volunteers who keep up the trails. Their work does not go unappreciated. Happy riding to all.
