Mt. Tom Trail South

It starts with a climb on foot up rock face. When you get to a point where you can ride follow the trail where you can. It's a very technical rocky ride that will test the best. I'm not the best but I loved it, a lot of drop offs and steep narrow trails on rocky formations that will test your nerves and skills. The view from the top is good and you can head east from this trail and ride some of the trails on the south side of 165.
Ten Rod Rd. Rt 165. About 1.4 miles west of white church on 165. If you are on Mt. Tom trail cross 165 and climb the rocks. If you you want to start here it's starts with a foot climb up a rock face.
Summary: In my opinion most of this section of Mt. Tom is not truly a trail, it's more of a trials area. Not unrideable, but really more of a trials/trick area, not huge drop offs, but your talking an average speed of 1-2mph for this 2 mile section.
If you enjoy drops, tricks and practicing your rock moves this is 1 of 2 places in Arcadia. But if your looking to ride, I would think twice about this section. But great places to stop at 4:20.
Recommended Route: You can park at the White church on Rte165, cross 165 onto the dirt road and take the 1st or 2nd right turn onto single track, both trails take you to the same place. Cross the river and head left, you'll find a combination of fire roads & single track that will take you out to a paved road crossing. Hit the trail head across the street and your on the hairy section of Mt. Tom.
You can also head out to Escoheag trail to the left behind the White Church up into HELL trail, this will take you out to the rock ledge at 165, cross over at the top of the hill and you can enter the other end of Mt. Tom.
Other recommended trails in the same area: If your into this trail, head up 165 and take a right onto Escoheagh Hill Road. Pull into the management area on the right about 1 mile up. Head back into the woods toward the right on the single track, you'll be in trials heaven. Don't forget the PADS!

Summary: Until I found this trail I thought mtb in ri sucked. And I mean sucked bad!But this trail has it all;slow tech. climbs,rippin'downhills,3to6 foot drops, and a line on the ridge where there is about a 50 foot drop.I ride out and back 2 to 3 times and it's never the same.
Recommended Route: I park right off Mt.Tom road right where it gets good. You start climbing and hit the good stuff in minutes!
Other recommended trails in the same area: where the trials motor bikes play I have heard it called "the gorge" or "the ledges"

Ridden Trail: Every few months

Summary: I hurt myself on this trail. It was fun. For anyone who has ridden the crazy rocky down-hill, you will know the rock I am talking about. It sits about half way down the trail. It is about 3.5 feet tall. It is about a 70 degree angle with the downhill. If you don't respect it, it will hurt you. I noticed it looking at me. I knew it was there.. I was going too fast. I hit it, and expected to go over the handlebars. Instead, the front shock held, and I went 8 feet into the air. I landed about 6 feet away from the bike. I rode away laughing my ass off.. My shoulder still hurts a year later, but it was worth it.. In all reality, it is a great ride. Just make sure you wear your gear- especially your brain bucket..
Recommended Route: Start on the south. Do the climb. Experience the downhill

Summary: The best Technical trail in RI by far, I have spend hours training and learning all the best and most technical lines on this trail, and can now ride it non-stop all the way. follow-me if you can and you will love every inch of this trail. It has absolutly made me the best rider I can be.
Recommended Route: Start out across the white church on to Mt. Tom. Acadia trails, forks off to the right onto Mt. Tom, white blaze. 3 mile warm-up before the Technical stuff.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Escoheag Trail. We call it the play ground, rocks galore

Summary: This trail never gets old. I have cleaned every section of it, but NEVER every section in the same day. This trail has honestly made me a better rider- there is a wide variety of terrain, and something for all levels of rider to test themselves with. It seems like I discover something new on it every trip, even if I have been on it at least 2 times a week for the past year- even tried it in the snow this year, FUN! I always start from the parking lot on the South side and head in the trail that way- the climbs on the are a good way to get you broken in for the ride. When you get to 165, cross to the North side and experiment a little- it is pretty tough to get lost, and there are a lot of great singletrack trails to explore. Keep track of your time, and head back to do Mt. Toms South in reverse. The downhill takes less than 15 minutes with stops, but it is way too fun of a time. Just be sure to be careful of pedestrians on the trail, as I have seen WAY more hikers than bikers, and they have the right of way. Ya have to be a good ambassador for your sport, if this area were ever to be shut down to bikers...... Enjoy this trail responsibly, it is well maintained singletrack, and no one has really expanded and made new sidecuts. It should stay that way! Keep the rubber side down-
Recommended Route: I had never been to Arcadia before and found Tom's description- followed it to a "T" without any problems and can not stop- it's a great route.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Any trail in the forest....
