Cross Country Rider Summary: Big River is classic East Coast riding. Lots of tight, twisty singletrack, which has mostly been created by the motorcyclists (which theoretically aren't allowed out there...) so you find heavily bermed corners and whoops in some sections. Terrain is mostly sandy pine forest, or swamp. You get a lot of exposed pine roots on most trails which will rattle your teeth on a hardtail. The trails that happen to cross swampy areas can be impassible if the weather has been wet. The only thing lacking is serious climbing. This is flatlander terrain. There are plenty of short steep climbs in and out of geological "gashes" left by glaciers. It is plenty big enough to easily get 3 hours without any repetition, and if you really learn your way around you could ride all day with very little repetition. The area is crisscrossed by old gravel roads that are now fire roads, so if you have a decent sense of direction it's hard to get too lost. Recommended Route: From the north, take Rt 95 to Exit 6, then left onto Rt 3. From the south, take Rt 95 to Exit 6 then right onto Rt 3. Once on Rt 3, take your second left, Burnt Sawmill Rd. Park on the side of the road about 1/4 past the dam. Evenings and weekends in season you are very likely to find other riders parking there. Beware hunting season (mid-Oct to mid-Feb) when you will need to wear minimum 200 square inches of blaze orange. Other recommended trails in the same area: Arcadia, Burlingame

, from Providence-via Michigan Summary: Well, I'm writing because I thought I might have a diiferent view of this trail. I recently moved to the North East and I've been extremely disappointed in the single track. Today I rode Big River for the first time and I am content. The trail is fast with tight single track that always for a "flow" or constant fast pace. This place reminds me of the trail which I grew up racing. Fast and fun, almost like playing a video game. I don't believe the so-called hardcore full suspension riders would enjoy it. Recommended Route: Take 95 to exit 6. Turn left immediately at the end of the ramp. Go about an 1/8th mi. and turn left-there are signs. Follow the blue arrows for the ride. Other recommended trails in the same area: Michigan comparison: Fort Custard

, from Charlestown Summary: Wow have I fallen in love with this place. The single tracks are great and the burms are fast. The puddles are difficlut to deal with in certain areas if you ride a day or two after a rain storm. I doesn't beat you over the head with any one thing. There are just enough climbs, drops, rocks, single and double track to keep you happy for a few hours. I have been told and have read that you can get lost there easily and I carry a compass just in case. Although, I have tried to get lost there and seem to end up back at the car. Hmmmm.....I will just have to keep trying. I do have to say that I did run into someone who said to me that Big River wasn't Mountain Biking....So, maybe there are some people out there who might get boored with this place therefore......my rating will reflect that. One last note. Each time that I go there I see about 4 other cars parked. People are finishing up rides or just getting started so it is easy to hook up with others to ride with. I have make a couple of friends there that way. A wonderful thing that is.:-) Recommended Route: I park after the dam on the right hand side just after the trailer. I would say take the first left or right from there and explore. Other recommended trails in the same area: Burlingame yellow and blue dot trials in Charlestown RI. Bluff point in Groton CT.
