Summary:
This trail is grossly misrepresented by the description here. As it stands now (with much expansion planned) you can do a 33 mile round trip that transitions from rail to trail to single track and fire road riding with half mile to mile climbs and descents in the middle. When tackled this way, the trail is definitely not for the average rail to trail rider with a road bike. If you take the time to explore, there are many offshoots into the woods that have been blazed by quads (which shouldn't be there, and I've never seen one, but it's pretty evident) and other mountain bikers, most likely local kids. IMPORTANT: You do go through some state gamelands. Please wear an orange vest if it's a hunting season. I have seen hunters. Mostly for spring turkey.

Recommended Route:
I start in the town of Slickville off of route 819. Take 22 east from Pittsburgh, pass 66 toll for Delmont and Greensburg and look for 819 north shortly thereafter. Park at the fire hall. The first five miles to Saltsburg is a downhill rail to trail (maybe 1.5%?) grade. Once in Saltsburg, start to follow signs for the West Penn Trail. The mile markers start on this trail. It's still rail to trail along the river for several miles then veers left onto the Dick Meyer section of the trail. At mile 5.5 on the Dick Meyer, the fun begins. It's pretty much downhill all the way to the reservoir. Then it's a brutal uphill to the other side of the damn. Once you come down the (seriously steep) switchbacks on the other side of the hill, it's a couple of flat miles over several stone arch bridges on the Conemaugh River Lake. I turn around at mile marker 11.5 at the new Q-Span bridge and do it all in the opposite direction. I'm not in the world's best shape, and it takes me about three hours to complete it. Give yourself four if you want to stop occasionally and take in some wonderful sights.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The Five Trail in Greensburg is a good 14 mile round trip workout and the Great Allegheny Passage is made for biking and hammock camping but everyone already knows that!

Summary:
The trail is excellent, albeit a little difficult to follow. And, most importantly, it's NOT just about the measley 4 miles of tar and chip from the Westinghouse plant. There's much more to explore, and great rewards.

Recommended Route:
I start from Saltsburg and work my way out to Clems, a popular stop for BBQ ribs and chicken on route 22. After completing the 4 miles from Saltsburg, head up the hill, cross the RR tracks, cruise through some country roads, follow the Heritage route extension through Conamaugh, do some more hill climbing and descending, follow trail to Westinghouse, cruise some more country roads (Westinghouse road), and end up at this roadside eatery along route 22 that is pretty well famous for its ribs and chicken. All-in-all, I can cruise for a good 30 miles round trip, and it is thoroughly enjoyable. It seems to be infinitely explorable.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Roaring Run, particularly for its single track up in the hills. Good fun, and nice woodlands.

Summary:
I've road this trail many times, it's as short trail but while worth the time to ride on it. I found a site with some really great pictures of this trail on it. The pictures on this site shows just how awesome this trail really is. http://users.adelphia.net/~lshean/pic2.html

Summary:
Trail is very easy to ride on. Awesomne views This Trail Runs Thru The Conemaugh River Dam Flood Control Area, Near Blairsville, Pennsylvania. This area called Livermore was made famous due to the fact the movie "Night of the Living Dead" was Filmed here before the flood control came into being. Something to ride on with water on all sides of you. Trail runs over four rock arch bridges. Well worth the time to ride on.
