Giants Despair

Average Rating:    (3.67 of 5)

I like to start at Giants Despair and take the old burning road to the tubs and back (15 mile loop). Stay parallel with 81 (its hard not to) for 4 or 5 miles and you should run into an old paved road, ride this uphill (1 or 2 miles) over the scary old bridge and it turns into the Tubs parking lot.

Summary:
From Mountain Top Hose Co. No. 1 parking area take the narrow gauge path down the mountain(ever so slightly). Lots of washouts this time of year and other obstacles to make the ride interesting. When you see the road/Bridge over the tracks that parellel the narrow gauge you are about half way down to Giants Despair Road. Continue on downward(starts to get steeper)and the land on your right will drop off. This is the Seven Tubs stream. The land on your left will grow to a cliff you are riding along. Really nice this time of year due to be able to see a good 400 yards into the woods. Follow all the way down until you begin to ride along with RT 81 in sight. Follow the main path back to your stashed vehicle on Giants Despair Road. You will probably see quad riders and motorcyclists along the trail. There are some hunters that use the pits along 81 to set up for target practice. All have been friendly and glad to share the area with other outdoor enthusiasts.

Recommended Route:
Drop a vehicle at the entrance on Giants Despair Road or just across the street in the open staging area or just up the road at the entrance to the Mobile Home Park. Jump in another vehicle and drive up to Mountain Top Hose Co. No. 1 parking lot(just off 309 and 437 at the top of the mountain). Start here.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Pa Gamelands across from the Broadway Tavern in Mountain Top. Seven Tubs off 115.

Summary:
It's not the greatest ride in the world, but it's one of the few that i can get to on a weekday -
it's an endless network of marginal singletrack and old mining roads
my one word of caution is to look out for guys on quads (and there are alot of them) - when you hear them coming, get the hell out of the way because there's a good chance they won't see you

Recommended Route:
Be creative

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Merli Sarnoski -in my opinion, the greatest ride in NE Pennsyvania

Summary:
Like Andy says, this mountain offers lots of entertaining riding for everyone from rec riders to climb-crazy hammers. I especially like riding over the sections where there's still mine fires burning. There's nothing like riding on ground so hot you can fry eggs on, and there's nothing quite like the smell of fresh sulphor dioxide. The parts of the mountain that are not on fire or strip-mined out are still quite pretty.

Recommended Route:
Once at the tubs you can carry your bike up to the narrow-gauge railroad bed (or bypass the tubs and ride right to the railroad by staying to the right when you pass the dinosaurs [the rusting heavy equipment]). Take this easy trail up to Laurel Run, then hop on the trail that follows the regular railroad. To your left is lots of fun single track. Or stay on the easy railroad trail to MountainTop and make the descent next to 309 back to W-B and find your way back to Giants' Dispair. Haven't done this in a few years, so I ferget the details, but you'll figure it out if you wanna do it. Or take the tubs ride reviewed last year to the top of the mountain if you want some really tough climbing.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Campbell's ledge, Frances Slocum.
