Allegheny River & Sam Justus

Great scenes of the Allegheny River from Emlenton to Oil City. At lower water levels there are several islands in the river that you can wade out to. We rode from the parking lot in Emlenton, which is very easy to find. The trail was paved all but .5 of the 27 miles to Franklin. The trail cuts into "private property" which the owner blocked off! The trail closer to Emlenton is fairly new, older near Franklin with more mileage markers and interpretive signs. In Franklin, there are several picnic tables at 2 locations south of the bridge into town. You can also ride over the bridge to a waterfront park and shops and stores etc. The trail then continues another 5 miles to Oil City. Make sure you take a flash lite on this ride! There are two old tunnels that are paved inside and have reflectors but IT IS DARK! Each are about .5 mile long.

Summary:
For sure, take the flashlite! Not a crowded trail, hardly saw anyone until we got closer to Franklin.

Recommended Route:
If you can ride the 50 plus, start in Emlenton. Shorter legs then better to park in Franklin and cruise............
