Ridden Trail: Once a week

Weekend Warrior Summary: This is one of the nicest rail trails anywhere. Just about any type of bike can be ridden on it. It's a hard packed fine gravel surface and generally quite smooth. There is a slight but noticeable grade. From the parking lot at Philadelphia St. in York City it follows the old Northern Central Rairoad for 21 or so miles south to the Maryland line. From there it contiues another 20 plus miles passing thru Gunpowder State Park to Ashland MD. Unlike some trails of this type most of this is open and senic. This is a great trail to visit for history buffs. During the Civil War this was arguably the most important railroad in the nation. Along the way are descriptive placards with pictures of how it looked way back when. The trail passes through the 217' long Howard Tunnel. This is the oldest operating RR tunnel in America. Another point of interest in the museum at Hanover Junction. President Lincoln stopped here on his way to deliver the Gettysburg Address in Nov. 1863.
The highest elevation along the trail is at New Freedom, one mile north on the Mason Dixon Line. There is a museum there and this is a good place to find food and refreshments. Other good places are at Glen Rock and Seven Valleys.
Currently (Jan. 2008) a northern extension of the trail is under construction and a western link to Hanover PA via an old trolley line is in the planning stages. Recommended Route: One of my favorite rides is from York to Seven Valleys where we jump off the trail and visit the Seven Valleys Tavern for a late lunch.
There is good access and parking all along the trail. Please use the designated parking lots.

After wet weather the trails may be temporarily closed to avoid damage. Call 717-840-7440 for trail info. After hours there is a recorded message.

While you're there look at some of the other parks in York County.
There are many miles of hiking trails in the parks and the Mason Dixon Trail passes through the area. This is another gem to be explored and enjoyed.

, from Chester, NJ Summary: I attend York College of PA and this trail is right out my back door! This trail is a nice easy ride, great for relaxing. After hitting the books I'll hit this trail!! The cinder base makes it great for all year riding. The trail has the old fashion RR mile markers so you don't have to look down or play with your computer all the time, or if you don't have one makes it easy to tell how far you've been. Have seen a few side trails off the main rail trail which I have not explored yet, but some look promising. Seems like a good place to go riding with the kids, or you can take out your significant other if they don't ride. (And you want to take them riding without killing them!)Anyone can ride this trail! I have been on numerous rail trails and this one is up with the rest of them...The only weakness is on long rides it can become boring. In a nut shell..Easy on off points, nice cinder base, and great for relaxing! Recommended Route: Can jump on the trail at numerous points... www.york-county.org Has a Parks link which will show you the trail and other trails in the area. Other recommended trails in the same area: Rocky Ridge

, from LAFAYETTE HILL, PA Summary: Rode the trail with my wife on two days in May. York County has done a great job setting up this trail for a wide range of users. You can go for 80 miles with only a few road crossings. The path can accomodate different types of bikes. An enjoyable and comfortable ride in the country. Everyone we met was very friendly and helpful. Recommended Route: STATE LINE TO YORK Other recommended trails in the same area: Lehigh Gorge Trail.
