Lots of technical climbing and descending. Roots, rocks, and if you know where to look, drop-offs. Did I say technical.
Directions to "Valley Green", "Lincoln Drive", or "Bells Mill Road" can be gotten thru The Fairmount Commission at 215-685-0000. Permits are required here and can be had at the same number for free, but you can give a donation that goes into trail maintenance and signage.
Summary: This place rocks and is definately not over rated! Good climbs, good technical (if you know where to go) good decents and good flats. It has it all in a small 16 mile loop. There are some big climbs and some rockin decents. You do not need a FS to ride everything in the park. The new stuff IMBA is doing is great and very fast. This plase really does have a wide selection of trails to ride for every level.
Recommended Route: Start at bells mill rd and climd the monster on the forbidden trail side, just follow the trail from there and feel free to explore (the legal stuff)
Other recommended trails in the same area: French Creek, white clay

Summary: really over rated, people tend to think that, its the hardest place around, well its not. Dont get me wrong awesome place especially for being so close to the city, but stories about this place are blown way out of proportion. Its not as technical as everyone makes it seems, the climbs are not that terrible and contrary to many people I see out there, you actually dont need body armor or a full face mask to ride these trails. this wouldn't be an issue but there are a couple of problems with the area, but the most important is the general populous there. Because it is so close to the city, you get all sorts of people on the trails, if you go on a nice weekend, your better off walking the trails because your going to be stopping for people that are in your way ever 5 minutes anyway. Ive almost hit people numerous times on descents on nice weekends. There is a bonus though, they do allow night riding, so there are ways around that populated problem.
Recommended Route: do the whole thing, start at the monster, finish the ridge and then loop it around to the other side of the river
Other recommended trails in the same area: brandywine, French creek, white clay/middle run

Summary: this trails pretty awesome, first time i went i didnt know where to go so it can get confusing and somewhat intimidating. Very rocky and certain descents are technical but short. the best way to sum up the trail is like a mini-mountain. the climbs take anywhere from 2-15 mins with 1-4 mins descents. its very fun and keeps you on your toes, even as a local who rides 2-3 times a week i never get bored and have found favorite spots i like to hone my skills on.Ive ridden a lot of places (even ole texas..pfft) this is still a personal fav of mine. There is even some bowls for the aggressive/freerider.
Recommended Route: take right facing the inn and go down to the trail head right before next road about a 10 min ride at slow pace..good warm up.the trail head is the last on your left hand side right before you would come to a crosswalk. Shift down its a steep little climb, if you stay on that trail you'll find a network of trails some lead out to the main drive but you can always turn around. You'll learn great routes after a ride or two. Ask a local for a tip, probably the friendliest place in philadelphia
Summary: In response to Beldrugger (or whatever your name is) this is a good ride ESPECIALLY since it is in the midst of a major metropolitan area. Your reviews are filled with bragging about how great your skills are and how the east coast trails are beneath you. You trashed this park and Jim Thorpe. Go home to Texas, you ass. I know, I know, the riding is SO much better there.
I have been riding at Wissahickon weekly for 8 years and have yet to tire of it. You get a great aerobic workout, great technical section, climbing and some good (albeit short) downhill sections. These kind of trails within 5 minutes of downtown is a blessing.
Recommended Route: Start at off of Lincoln drive (where forbidden drive comes in), shoot off on the many trails into the hills and ride to Bells mills. Turn around and come back for a nice 16 mile loop. Approx 2 hours. One side of the creek (north I think) is mostly xc, the other will provide more technical stuff. Enjoy! ( and don't listen to the post below me)
