Wissahickon Trails
15 reviews
 3.8 of 5

This is a nice, quiet area for biking. A long path covered with tiny pebbles (a.k.a. a road) stretches for about 12 miles through the Wissahickon Valley. To your left and right all along the way you'll find side trails that lead you off into small creeks, up treacherous climbs, onto singletracks with 20-foot dropoffs to one side and blue-blazed downhills intended only for full-suspension bikes. They're a lot of fun. If you're in the Philadelphia area you should stop by and check em out. Ask for directions. Everybody around there knows where they are. P.S. The best trail (in my opinion) is exactly 1 half mile down from "the valley green inn" when the inn is on your right.

Trail Directions
This is more a collection of short trails than one long trail. They're found in an area of the Wissahickon known as "Valley Green". I'm just a kid, don't ask me for streetnames, I'll get em wrong. Instead, use a map!

Summary:
I used to live a few blocks from this area (2004/2005) and rode/walked there quite frequently. I never ran into any problems with people complaining or yelling. You'll have to leave the main gravel trail (Forbidden Path) to find anything uphill or downhill. Trails are on both sides of the creek. I'm not a hardcore rider but the uphill sections challenged me and the downhills were short but fun.

Recommended Route:
After exploring the off-route trails, I recommend getting back on the Forbidden Path and following it South to the end. You'll end up on the corner of Ridge Road. Make a right (West) onto Ridge Ave. Bear left at the "V" and follow Main Street into Manayunk. Great place to grab lunch as there are tons of restaraunts and bars. Plenty of outdoor seating for sunny days.

Summary:
After a glowing review from a fellow rider, a group of us drove a few hours to ride the "Wicked Wissahickon" on an awesome sunny fall day. After securing a parking place (not an easy feat on a nice day) we clipped in and headed out ready for action...down a paved road. Then some more paved path. With walkers, joggers, baby strollers, hikers and bikers all over it. Well, this is downtown Philly, after all, I thought. After a few miles, I started to wonder when the "wicked" part was going to start. After a few more miles I started to wonder when the singletrack was going to start...this trail is way wide, sandy, fast and not real challenging. Some washed out climbs and descents littered with roots, little rocks and bricks (bricks??) kept us awake, and so did the several dozen aforementioned trail users...do not go fast on this trail!! During the last few miles, I just gave up and enjoyed the scenery, which is quite nice.

Recommended Route:
For a nice Sunday ride with girlfriend/wife, do the yellow trail or stick to the gravel bike path. For good northeastern singletrack, go someplace else...

Other recommended trails in the same area:
I can't believe I passed Jim Thorpe on the way to this ride...

Summary:
This is a great trail to go on for fun. If you are looking for jumps and a lot of speed this is not the place to go. Thats one reason why im going somewhere else soon. Also i agree with the rest of the people who said it. Be careful around the people on the main trail(forbidden drive) they are b*tches. One wrong move and you have a whole crowd yelling at you. In my opinion get off the main trail as quickly as possible

Recommended Route:
any trail that hasnt been touched recently by park maitenence

Other recommended trails in the same area:
im getting into downhill/freeride so i recommend diablo freeride park

Summary:
BIG PROBLEM GETTING WORSE- It's the parks
Management/maintenance crew. Maybe someone can help...

if you have ridden there for a while...Over the past 5-6 years or so
The "trail maintenance" at the Wiss has resulted in a loss of the most
technical/rocky sections of the east side of the park. It may as well be
a road ride now. I am all for trail preservation and sustainability- so
please read on.

The climb immediately off of the bells mill rd. parking lot has been 50%
leveled. They took a dozer and just flattened it. what remains- a slick
of mud up to the first right turn. I am afraid they will do the other 50%
sometime soon and ruin the climb completely (that's the rider in me).
Seriously-besides its being ugly and not fun to walk as its slick and
muddy- they took no care to maintain the trail- they killed it. they are
apparently to lazy to build water bars and selectively manage the trail.
it is a real shame.

Recommended Route:
one side then the other

Other recommended trails in the same area:
french creek, belmont plateau
