Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Cross Country Rider Summary: The Montour Trail now runs from Coraopolis to past Hendersonville, a distance of about 30 miles. Milepost 0 is at Coraopolis. Between mile 3 & 4, there was significant flood damage from the remnants of Hurricane Ivan, in Sept., 2004. Also near Cecil (about mile 24) there are 3 small breaks in the trail for which there are detours. Other portions of the trail are finished too, although they are smaller. It is a rail trail, so all grades are readily doable, as proof, I can easily do them. Couple neat tunnels too, mile 7, and at mile 27. Recommended Route: Try mile 6 from Cliff Mine Rd. to the US Rt 22 underpass @ mile 12, one long 6 mile upgrade, then have fun comming back downhill. Watch out for heavy traffic between mi 6 & 8 on weekends though. Other recommended trails in the same area: Panhandle Trail - same-type ride without the tunnels.

Ridden Trail: Once a week

Cross Country Rider Summary: This is my training ride when I can't get out to other trails, during the week. It's an excellent opportunity to spin in the big ring without having to deal with traffic, dogs and the occasional bass boat being pulled behind a pick-up along the shoulder of the road. One does have to look out for the deer and turkies once you get past route 22. It's a well built and wonderfully maintained rail-trail with some opportunities for singletrack riding spurring off from the main trail. There is some local history with remnants of the railroad, the mines and their tailings and an occasional defunct oil rig. The trail association does a great job and their folks are very friendly and informative. The local trail-users, however, are the most unfriendly bunch of poopy-heads that I have ever seen! People: take the time to say "Hello" to those you meet, pass and see! It's really not that scarey. In other places, when two like-minded atheletes pass each other (runners, walkes, cyclists) there is always a wave and and a smile, even if they are both working hard to get up or down the trail. You are on a rail-trail in Pittsburgh, people, how serious can that be? Lighten-up and enjoy the trail, the views and the folks around you. Recommended Route: Coraopolis to the other end and back - about 34 miles.

Ridden Trail: Once a month

, from Pittsburgh, PA Summary: Many trail lots to choose from. Park anywhere from Corapolis and along trail to Boggs which is the trail end at this time. Will eventually connect to Cecil which is another section of finished trail. The slight upgrade which continues for at least 1 mile at the end of the trail to Boggs (if you started at Coraopolis) is a great section of the trail. Going back is even better. From Coraopolis trail has several road crossings which seem to be getting busier. Interesting scenery as trail passes through business area where workers walk, then newly developing homesites, on to less developed wooded areas. Creek along trail is heavily fished during trout season. Has railroad tunnel that recently had lighting added. Great addition. Easy ride. Fun for all family members. Watch for walkers and dogs! Be careful at crossings. Recommended Route: Park along Montour Run if you take Montour Exit off Parway West. Many lots to choose from - easily accessible. 9 miles of trail from Coraopolis to Boggs. Other recommended trails in the same area: Yough trail from Connellsville to Ohiopyle is a nice day trip.

, from Moon, PA Summary: The rail-trail is fun if you're really young or really old. The Brother's Grimm singletrack area near the Coraopolis end of the trail used to be rad, but Kaufmanns's dept. store took care of that. Recommended Route: Parkway to Montour Run exit. Park in office park or at Wickes Furniture. Other recommended trails in the same area: Do yourself a favor and take to rail trail towards Clinton until you hit the crazy 6-way intersection. Take Enlo Road all the way for some great riding in the Clinto area.
