Ridden Trail: Once a week

Downhiller Summary: This trail was good at one time but is now mostly destoyed in the upper half due to land development. The fun downhill parts are now lots with tractors and other machinery parked in them. It is a shame. I rode this trail a few years ago and it was awesome. The trails are nonexistent now on the upper half off of flaggstaff rd. Don't make the mistake of riding uphill on flaggstaff rd for 2 miles. It is a great dissapointment. I also bought the map at blue mountain sports and found that it is terribly outdated. (DON'T BUY IT PLEASE!) It doesn't show all of the trails and most of the trails in the book have been destroyed. Jim Thorpe has been known to have some of the best riding but it is becoming more limited due to the land developers. Very sad. Something has to be done. Recommended Route: N/A Other recommended trails in the same area: Broad mountain or Buzzards point.

Weekend Warrior Summary: I am a newbie, so take my review with a grain of salt. The Mauch Chunk Ridge trail offers some spectacular views of Jim Thorpe. The steep Flagstaff Road portion is monotenous. Once leaving the road and entering the Mauch Chunk Ridge Trail, I found the terrain to be quite challenging. There is at least one good steep rocky climb. The Mauch Chunk Ridge connector, a steep downhill, proved to quite difficult but fun for me at least. There were not any logs to be found however. The trail was easy to follow. Recommended Route: Start at Mauch Chunk Lake Park. Head to the Damn and pick up the Switchback Trail. Follow the Switchback to Flaggstaff Road. Go right on Flagstaff Road riding up a steep incline for about 2 miles. Pass the peak and gated path of right and continue an old in on your right for good views. Retrace your steps back to gate and make a left on Mauch Chunk Ridge Trail which eventually becomes the Fireline Trail. Take the Mauch Chunk Ridge Connector to the Switchback to head back to the lake. Other recommended trails in the same area: Mt. Pisgah Trail

Downhiller Summary: I picked this route out of the Blue Mountain Bike shop's Book because it said it was "some of the most advanced riding in the region". I was not impressed. I do have to say that the 1/2 mile downhill section was fun and fast but really not too hard to handle. I did get a nice aerobic work out which was nice. This is the 2nd trail I have done in Jim Thorpe and pretty much have come to the conclusion that Thorpe is a place for XCers. I am sure some local boys have some nice freeride stuff built but I have yet to find any. Recommended Route: I have yet to find a trail in Jim Thorpe that I would recommend.

Cross Country Rider
, from Rochester, NY USA Summary: This was one of the first places I went to camp and ride. We discovered that the best riding was when you crossed the dam and rode the ridge above the lake. We also rode the "Switchback Gravity Railroad" trail bed. This was the first roller coaster ever built, and the trails were a lot of fun downhill and not too steep uphill. The campground was a little cramped, no alcohol allowed (they called the state troopers on some dumb guys that left their empties on their picnic table and kicked them out!) Recommended Route: We discovered that the best riding was when you crossed the dam and rode the ridge above the lake. We also rode the "Switchback Gravity Railroad" trail bed. This was the first roller coaster ever built, and the trails were a lot of fun downhill and not too steep uphill. We also rode under the high tension power lines into another series of trails. Don't ride the trail that follows the shore of the lake--it is strewn with rocks and boulders and you'll be carrying your bike more than riding. Other recommended trails in the same area: Hell's Hollow.
