mostly-unmapped fireroad & singletrack for intermediate to advanced riders
Take the PA Turnpike Northeast Extension (Interstate 476) to Exit 34, exit onto 209 south, two miles to route 443, follow signs to Jim Thorpe - one of the local bike shops will be able to provide some rough maps of the area's trails
Summary: The break in the weather has prompted a lot of riders to contact me with questions regarding trail closures. Here's an update... Deer Path, Pine Tar and the like are closed indefinitely due to erosion concerns. Contact the PA Game Commission to voice your opinion about these closures. Closing trails has put a squeeze on riding in JT. There are still plenty of trails ro ride and explore... more than enough to keep you interested. I do still offer a guide service, but I have less availability than previous years. Unfortunately, a good potion of the best riding remains unmapped due to the fact that it crosses or lies upon private land. Of course I'm biased, but JT truly does offer some awesome riding. Challenging for the technical and/or aerobically fit rider.
Recommended Route: Am Std, Broad Mtn in general, Flagstaff/Bob's. Pisgah/Summit Hill, 28 path, Mauch Chunk are fantastic, but difficult to navigate. Check out the guide books, explore on your own, or email me for trail info/guided rides.

Summary: Very nice place to bike. I went for the whole day and hardly rode any of the trails. I was able to get to do switch back, part of the advance trail (I think) and Mauch Park trails. I rode down the side of the mountain by the power lines. Nothing but crazy rocks. It was fun, but I had to take a break half way down. Mauch park was nice, climb up some of the trails (20 minutes) and then ride them down. I'm sure there is an easier way to do them though.
Recommended Route: 1)Explore or buy the trail book from Blue Mountain Sports.
2) I bought the book, but the trails aren't marked so you have to have a sharp eye.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Belmont Plateau, French Creek

Summary: I just spent the weekend in Lehighton just four miles down the tow path from Jim Thorpe. I played around Broad Mountain, found some totally sweet technical singletrack (off the beaten trail). Cruised the tow at night (what a pissa) and rode the switchback on Sunday morn. If it weren't for the four inches of rain that fell on Saturday, I probably would have done Pisgah as well. JT is not your typical marked trail. There is a ton of exploring to be done. I ran into some really cool locals (Ed, Tom and Za) who filled me in on some fun. Take your time in JT, explore, play... aint that what Mountain Biiking is supposed to be about. p.s. We stayed at a great place (sleeps at least 8 Hairymen) right on the Tow Path. The place was immaculate, and our hosts made sure all our needs were met. A big thanks to Rod and Jennifer. www.canalside.org
Recommended Route: Hook up with the local(s). They know where the sweet stuff is.

Summary: It is true that the PA Game Commission has declared the closure of state gamelands to riders of both bikes and horses. I cannot comment as to whether or not one should still attempt to ride trails on the Broad, but I can tell you that I still do. I still suggest that you consider doing some exploration on your own prior to contacting me. However, as I have stated in the past, the JT area contains some fantastic advanced terrain that is unmapped. It seems as though some people attempt to discredit me for offering a guide service ... questioning the existence of these thrilling yet unmapped trails. I assure you, my guide service exists for a reason. Many riders have chosen to contact me first rather than wander about on their own. Pisgah and Nesquehoning mtn offer some great advanced level riding. Unless you are familiar with the lay of the land, it would be very difficult to link up an enjoyable ride. Yes, these trails are unmapped, mostly because they lie partly or entirely on private land. The routes I ride are intermediate-advanced-expert, and can be tailored to suit your preference. Most rides average 12-20 miles and require 3-4 hours to complete. I've done my best to link together quality trails that offer technical challenges, decent climbs, cool descents, and some enjoyable scenery. I take pride in the type of riding that JT has to offer, therefore I like to show our visitors the best the area has to offer. Send an email to guidejt@hotmail.com to contact me for more info about a guided ride, lodging, eats, drinks, and other activities in the JT area.
Recommended Route: 1. Explore on your own 2. Contact me for info regarding guided tours of Pisgah, Nesquehoning Mtn, Broad Mtn
