Gibson Covered Bridge Trails

I used to ride here a lot about 4 years ago. I just went back recently to see how much developing had taken over in the area and it turned out to be very little. Of the areas I ride in my local area, this is by far the biggest. The variety of terrain covers the spectrum, from flat, dirt-road width trails along the bottom, to very technical double-track hills, to rolling single and double track trails along the top and sides of the hills. The technical difficulty also varies making it a good place for beginners to explore a bit, and a great place for more experienced riders to try out their high-speed riding, as well as their climbing and descending skills. For the very brave, I remember a few extremely steep pieces of trail in this area, so if you're hungry, go exploring, and I'm sure you'll find them. Finally, of all of the places I've ridden, this is one of my favorites because it is not crowded and it has everything to offer riders new to this area.

Trail Directions
The trailhead is on Harmony Hill Road, on the north side of US Rte. 322 about midwat between Downingtown and West Chester. As you're travelling on 322, just look for a covered bridge. There's a parking area just on the other side. Right now the bridge is closed, so follow the detour signs for Harmony Hill road. They'll dump you onto Harmony Hill at a 4-way stop about a mile away from the parking area.

Summary:
These trails are open again, they have been rerouted and are quite nice. The other side of skelp level rd (paradise farm) is closed now. Most of the real technical dh's are gone and so are the jumps, they have been replaced with some nice flowing trails though.

Recommended Route:
They keep changing them and closing them just go there- don't cross the brandywine or a road and you will find your car again

Other recommended trails in the same area:
french, marsh, wisa, fair hill, white clay

Summary:
I'm just a beginner (been riding for about 1/2 a year, have about 20 rides under my belt), but this is my favorite trail system mostly due to its proximity to my work (in Exton). It's not too technical, although there are some difficult climbs and obstacles for beginners. There are some very fun downhills with some interesting dropoffs. The system also has a fun water crossing, and for the nutcases out there, a few interesting doubles.

Recommended Route:
The map shown above isn't really accurate. I usually use the trail head located near the covered bridge at the Harmony Hill / 322 intersection. There is a small parking area here where you can park your car and unload your bike. The trail head is just east of the bridge on the north side of the road. There is one part that is sort of tricky, when you hit the first "clearing" (you'll see a rusty old pickup truck and a dirtbike tabletop), be sure and ride up the hill on doubletrack gravel road on the left... the trail continues at the top on the left. I normally then continue to ride, cross Skelp Level Road, nice downhill section leading to a water crossing, then some climbing back to the road where I turn around and do the whole thing backwards. A fun ride that takes about an hour for a beginner like myself.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Marsh Creek, French Creek

Summary:
To follow up the previous review, this trail system is currently closed. The land has been purchased by East Bradford Township but they have not yet found an organization to manage the property.

They are working with local mountain bikers and the IMBA to find a land manager who will permit biking on this property so it's likely we'll be able to ride here in the future.

For now, please stay off these trails and give the township time to make the right decisions. By keeping our word and staying off these trails during this transition period, we'll help our chances for longer term usage.

Recommended Route:
For now, avoid the trails on any property between Harmony Hill Road, Skelp Level Road, 322, and the Trestle Bridge Corporate Center.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Marsh Creek, French Creek, Hibernia Park, Brandywine Creek State Park

Summary:
In an update to my last review (as “Will”), I have been given to believe that East Bradford Township has purchased this land from SonCo, making it public land. They are contemplating a conservation easement on it, but for now it is held as “open space.” Or so I have been told. This would be very good news for those wishing to ride it.
