Frick Park

A pretty good place for right in the middle of a city. Moderately technical singeltrack with lots of pulse-pounding descents. Good singletrack can be found throughout the park. Follow the paved path at the playgrounds off of Beechwood Boulevard back toward the soccer field and watch out for all the dogs. Trailheads to several descents can be found at the far end of the soccer field. Pick any trail and it will lead you downhill. At the very bottom follow the park road to the left and climb back up the Ravine(?) Trail toward the top again. This park may not be the safest place to ride at night.

Summary:
You can't beat having this good of trails this close to downtown. The single track is killer and the climb back up to the top is not really that bad (the new crushed stone kind of sucks). Pick a trail that cuts across the hill for longer decents or bomb straight down from the top and hold on tight! Great obsticles all over the place if you know where to find them.

Recommended Route:
Start at either the Nature center or the Beachwood baseball field and look for trails cutting into the woods. Ride down on the single track so you don't piss off the hikers. Use the main marked trails to climb back up.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Riverview park, Boyce, Hartwood, Moraine

Summary:
Great place to learn and step up your skill level. Convenient for Pittsburgh folks. Trails for all abilities. Lots of technical downhill and leg shredding uphill. Just look out for the hikers, dogs, and the dog poo (I always manage to find the steaming piles!). I would recommend Frick to anyone!

Summary:
Update for fall of 2003. The main Rollercoaster area has been covered with cinder covered walking paths and the slag dumps are now a housing development.
2/3 of the park is now gone and only steep sections remain. If you do extreme freeriding you might like it but there is almost no good cross country riding.

Recommended Route:
Put slicks on your bike and do loops around the golf course at nearby Schenley Park, Frick in lame.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Boyce Park in Penn Hills

Summary:
I used to go on this trail about 5 times a week when I was going to school at Pitt. What's really cool about Frick Park is that you can make stops over at the bike shop or gas stations in Squirrel Hill for a quick lube or some water for the trails ... all on the way! My favorite route is the "Out the Back" trail because it has the least uphill climbs and wickedest downhill descents. Fallen trees that you have to duck under and/or jump over made the trail challenging. I remember this one decline where its really steep and just as you hit the bottom, you have to maneuver to the right and squeeze between 2 trees that allows only inches of clearance for either side of the handle bars. The only thing I didn't like about this trail is that you go down so fast and it take so long to get back up! Frick needs a ski (bike) lift! I've since moved down to Virginia and have not touched my bike since. I'm currently looking for similar trails down here for spring 2003. Please contact me if you know of any. Thanks.

Recommended Route:
I think it's called "Out the Back"

Summary:
I dont understand why anyone would knock this park. This is a gem where else can you go off-roading right smack in the middle of a city? There are many crisscrossing trails, so its easy to get confused at first. Some are very steep and challenging. In fact, some of the most difficult sections of trail Ive ever ridden can be found in this park, if you know where to look. And if you know where to look, you wont run into anyone. One complaint: stick to the existing trails some people are creating new trails, spurs and ride-arounds that are widening, eroding or otherwise negatively impacting the existing ones it makes things confusing and could get mtn bikers kicked out of the park entirely, which is always a top concern. Use it, dont abuse it. When I lived in Pittsburgh I rode here daily because it was so convenient to get to and I could get a great ride in an hour or two. Even at night I never had any problems. Now Im in SoCal where I have to drive in traffic for 45min to get to a half-decent trail that is overrun with hikers (not necessarily bike-friendly) and other bikers. To those who complain about Frick you dont know how good you have it.

Recommended Route:
So many places to start - you can park at the nature center, the parklet off of Beechwood, or start at the bottom at the park along Braddock. I cant give my recommended route because it is too hard to explain you have to find the good trails on your own.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Tons o' riding around Pittsburgh - Boyce Park, Hartwood Acres, North Park, South Park, Deer Lakes to name a few.
