French Creek State Park
63 reviews
4.14 of 5
Network of trails on well-maintained state park land. Maps provided at ranger station. Some trails closed to MTB (reserved for hiking). Various loops can be done from 4mi to 25mi in total. Good mix of trails - with the singletrack variety you'd expect out of a hilly Pennsylvania region.
Addl nicies: popular tent camping in the park, couple of lakes, cabins for rent (call 1 year in advance)
French Creek State Park, located in Berks and Chester counties, contains 7,339 acres. It is located in southeastern Pennsylvania, approximately 14 miles southeast of Reading. It is readily accessible from the Pennsylvania Turnpike and is located approximately 7 miles northeast of the Morgantown Interchange (Exit 22) on PA Route 345.
Summary: Just went to a hardtail 29er, from a full suspension rig. Don't get me wrong, I love the bike - rides like a dream, but you have to attack the creek differently, you spend more time off the seat using your legs as shock absorbers - because this place has got ROCKS!! I'm kind of spoiled, I only live 20 minutes away, and this place has all I need, so I don't have much to go on by ways of comparison. That said, guys I have talked to and ridden with say that other places (Jim Thorpe, Brandywine, De.) which require a longer drive are no better and not as technical - so why waiste my time driving?
Recommended Route: Mill Creek Lane is a bear! A mile in you come to a fork; if you go left, you'll go straight down the mountain - watch out for the switch-backs!! You'll come around in a big loop and go up two legthy rock creeks - your legs will be fried. In between the hill and the rock-creeks are creeks and jumps and some of the best terrain you could ask for, but to get there you have to earn it; because whichever way you decide to go when you come to that fork, right or left, you're gonna feel it. Basically, you have to decide whether you want to tackle the rock-creeks uphill, or the steep side of the mountain uphill. Good luck!!
Other recommended trails in the same area: Lenape trail is another good one (green). Take it down to Scott's Lake, and hop on the blue trail (forget the name) and take it around the lake. Not quite as brutal as Mill Creek, but a blast with some great straightaways to pick up a head of steam in between some narrow switch-backs!! You'll have a blast! Good riding!

Summary: ARRRRGGGGHHHH only real men can ride a ridged here, no sissy suspension needed here!!!!...... Just kidding, I,ve been riding here since my BMX days, about 20 years. I rode a full ridged Canondale for many years..... AND I RIPPED IT UP (once again please note sarcasm). Now I ride a damn near full downhill bike here and it's incredible, sure it's a ittle slow on the up but hey you get a better work out. Then the trail goes down and I don't care if your He-Man and Skeletor's love child your gonna have more fun on a squishy bike. If you live near here and like riding a bike, you should really check this place out. Do you need a full suspension? No, but it helps. When you consider where this place is it deserves a 5 overall.
Recommended Route: The runs coming down from the firetower and the area west of 345.

Summary: Def the best tech dirt in southeast PA. All natural..def the spot to check your rock steez. read the reviews, people are scared of this place. Grew up riding the crick, broke some bones, learned the way. Ridden california and back and can't stay away from this place. nirvana on wheels. People say you need a 5+ squishie...i have to disagree, me and my crew kill it on 29ers. it's not for the faint of heart but will blow yours up. it's the spot to check on any sunday moring right after the sun comes up, shed rd...if your scared, go to church...
Recommended Route: mill point to the fire tower drop.....it's all good. stay off your brakes in the courners though.....they shut down our lanes due to poor riding ability
Other recommended trails in the same area: wiss @ night, ski denton all summer long...

Summary: I ride F.C. at least thee times a week year round and I'm a little shocked about all the guys saying "dude full suspension is a must" bull. I have ridden the entire park on a rigid steel bike, a scandium softtail and a fully, the fully is now in retirement! This park is a rad hardtail ride but not for the novice or faint of heart. If you have the skills TAKE YOUR HARDTAIL, go fast, wheely drop everything, even those big water bars and smile, if you still have all your teeth by the end of the day. If there is one "must have" bike for FC it's not five inches of squish it's a 29er.
Recommended Route: EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!
Other recommended trails in the same area: It's not in the same area but if you want to push youself to the tech edge go to Ski Denton in Coudersport. The reason FC is not a difficulty rating of five peppers is because I ride Denton, small, mostly unkown but this place is no joke. Ride it!

Summary: It's a good mix of everything. You can race through tight singletrack and run into a rock garden. The downhills had some bigger rocks and water breakers to jump/avoid. I would go here more often but unfortunately most of it is closed to mtn biking.
Recommended Route: Not sure which way we went but the blue trail rocks!
Other recommended trails in the same area: Blue Marsh
