Mt Bachelor to Bend

This ride is a created by linking several other trails. Someone with more local knowledge can provide the names and more specific descriptions. Move over McKenzie River. This ride is just a blast and at close to 40 miles, it is 50% longer the McK Rvr! The trail rises for (approx. 3 miles) at a fairly gradual pace but it still takes some decent lungs do to the altitude. From the top, the trail twists and winds its way down towards Bend. There are a few moderate climbs mixed in and but nothing too noteworthy. Twisty single track, rock drops, steeper sections with switchbacks and tons of fine dirt to coat the working lungs. Easy to get lost of make wrong turns. But it is truly one of the best "EPIC" rides in Oregon.

Trail Directions
Arrange shuttle. Drive up to Mt. Bachelor. Just beofre the parking lot there is a trailhead parking lot on the right. (don't know the name). Trial starts by the out-house. Leave the other car in town or at Phils Trailhead. I guess if you asked in town, the locals would call this ride the Bend to Bachelor ride. :-)

Summary:
Park at Dutchman flats, take the trail next to the bathrooms for 4.7 miles up to (almost) top of Tumalo peak (a good climb)than head down for a fast downhill ride across a fun obstical in the trail (a ladder built cross over a couple logs either jump offramp or go down a ladder) heading toward swampy lakes trailhead (7.1M)go left at intersection toward swampy lakes shelter than take a left around shelter heading toward tumalo creek trail when you come to the next Y in the trail(stay left you can go look at falls) or turn right just keep going on tumalo creek trail heading east toward the entrance of the tumalo creek trails, than head south on at trailhead on the new skyliner trail you will start climbing until you reach the #29 trail marker (21.9m) keep going toward phils trailhead, this is the best part of the ride (the WHOOPS TRAIL) awsome non stop whoops to the #24 trail marker than your on Bens trail heading toward Phils trail head #17 take a left down to #5 take a right than to #2 take a left and your out 1 mile later and 5 mile from downtown bend 31 miles total

Summary:
Called the "White Trash Downhill" (Bachie to Bend) if you car shuttle but you will reap a greater reward for making a loop out of the ride by riding up first and earning your right to put the studder bumps in the corners. Thank COTA later for cleaning up after your bad riding habits. Please observe trail closures to migrating Elk on Flagline and basically any of the upper trails. Tricky navigation once you are several miles past Swampy Lakes shelter in order to best hook up the trails and get to the upper WHoops leading you to either Ben's trail or Phil's Canyon sections. I suggest go to Hutch's on the West side and buy a map. They are worth the small investment and offer great detail and trail options. Otherwise, follow the knobby tracks in the moon dust and have a ball.

Recommended Route:
Town/Mrazek/Northfork-Happy Valley/Metolius Windego connector to Flagline and begin to do the White Trash Downhill.

If you ride this route, you will have hit most every majory artery of the trails west of town aside from Storm King which is another fun trail if you liked what you saw.

if you would know how to turn, you would not make studder bumps - or stay off your brakes, or learn to set up your bike

Summary:
This first 2.5 mile section is called "Dutchman to Flagline"- The first 1.5 is rolling with a slightly downhill feel. Nice little warmup for the 3 miles of climbing that follow. Once you cross the dry creekbed at the 1.5 mile mark you begin a pretty steep 1 mile climb up into the hemlock forest. Beautiful and almost surreal ambience. You reach the flagline trail after the first climb and have a choice of going right or left. This route goes to the right, but the left is also awesome and is in itself an alternate 27 mile singletrack ride back to Shevlin Park in Bend via the Mrazek Trail. Anyway, go right and flagline and begin climbing for 2 more miles- Not extremely steep, just pace it. Now begins the fun. Descend the rest of Flagline-- approx. 6 miles until it T's into the Swampy Lake Trail. Go left and follow the trail around to the Swampy Snow Shelter. There is a fork at the shelter. Stay to the right. The trail to the left drops 4 miles down the South Fork trail to Tumalo Falls (100 ft. waterfall) and the base of the North Fork Trail. Next 3.5 miles will take you to Swede Shelter across a dry creek bed, some log hops and generally rolling ridge terrain. There is a spot along this section where a connecting trail comes in from the right. Just stay straight. The trail will dump you out onto a fire road. Look directly across the fire road and see the singletrack trail heading east toward town. This is your trail. However, if you park your bike against the bushes or a log and walk down the fire road to your left, you will see the Swede snow shelter. Great place for a break and views of Broken Top to the west. Swede Shelter is about the 1/2 way point for this ride. When ready, get back on the bike and pick up the singletrack. This next 4 mile section of trail is officially called Sector 16, but known to locals as "Stumps" or "Stumps don't lie"-- This is a great section and altogether different from anything else along the route. Very tight, narrow trail that meanders through tight trees and over numerous small log hops. The trail will bring you out to a logging road. Here is where it gets tricky to reconnect to the Phil's area singletrack. When you come out of the singletrack, go straight 20-30 yards to the Logging road. Turn right and follow the logging road downhill about 3/4 mile. Along the way, you will notice another logging road coming in from the left that merges with the one you are on--stay straight and continue downhill until you reach another large logging road that crosses the one you are on. Stop at this intersection. Not easy, since you are flying down the logging road. At the intersection, turn left and climb gradually up this road for 100 yards and look for the singletrack on your right. Jump on this singletrack trail (Upper Whoop de Do) and begin a great 2 mile descent. 1st mile is through manzanita and the 2nd mile jumps back into the pine. The trail will empty out onto a fire road. stay straight and conntinue on to the singletrack. The next 2 miles are called Lower Whoop de Do. All downhill, super fun natural rolling whoops and jumps. This trail will dump you into a little camp site and logging road. Follow the logging road and stay to the right at any forks until you hook back into singletrack about 1/2 a mile from leaving lower whoop de do. This new section of singletrack is called Ben's and will take you all the way back to Phil's trailhead. Or you can veer off to the right on VooDoo for a mile and connect to Phil's and take any of 1-3 different routes back down to the trailhead. You will need to shuttle back up to get your car unless someone dropped you off. Special Note: The flagilne trail does not open up until August 15th due to elk calving in the area. In most years, Dutchman to Flagline is covered with snow until late July anyway. Best to do this ride from August 15 to end of October.

Recommended Route:
Drive up or get a ride up to the Dutchman Flat staging area, just across from the entrance to the Main Lodge at Mt. Bachelor. The trail begins past the outhouse. 30 miles of singletrack all the way back to Phil's trailhead.

Summary:
This one was a blast and well worth the wait. Fast and slow, flat and steep (in sections) but mostly just a nice downward slope to Bend. More fun than riding McKenzie River even without all the rocks. It is dusty and there is a great little cabin to stop and check the views and rest up.
