Clackamas River Trail

Average Rating:    (3.44 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 9

Highly Technical! Lots of up and down hills. Very narrow trail at parts with 100 - 200 feet drop offs ending in the Clackamas river! Make sure your bike and tires are in top shape. This trail will put them to the test. You can either ride back to your vehicle the same way you came, or by the highway. You can also, with two vehicles, park at both ends of the trail. You'll need to stop at the Ranger Station just prior to entering Estacada to purchase a $3.00 trail head parking permit. This trai is awesome! Bring your camera for some incredible scenery.

Summary:
I found out, after the fact, that this beauty is now closed to bikes. Awesome scenery with seasonal waterfalls and excellent views of the Clackamas River. The trail isn't that technical but the nice, windy singletrack is very narrow for much of the duration. At times it narrows to 2 feet wide or less where the one side is bordered by a drop into the river - and I mean a DROP from 100 to 200 feet so it can be intimidating for some and suicidal for out-of control, show off types. Climbing isn't too bad as there are lots of ups and downs. Since it is closed, I cannot recommend riding it BUT IF YOU DO, please do so in the evenings when there is less chance of running into hikers (lots of narrow blind corners which is why it is closed).

Recommended Route:
None - DO NOT RIDE - CLOSED TO BIKES!
(SYSOP Should remove trail from list)

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The ranger district closed the trail because it simply is not wide enough to safely pass hikers at many points. I was told that another good LEGAL area starts near the power lines at Roaring River Campground and also to check out Rock Lakes Basin and Shell Lake Basin, all nearby in the Mt. Hood National Forest, and all LEGAL to MTB riding.

THIS TRAIL IS CLOSED TO BIKES AND HAS BEEN FOR THE LAST 3 YEARS! We stopped by the estacada ranger station for our parking permit and they said "I hope your not thinking your going to ride the Clackamas river trail, It is closed to bikes."
If you are into poaching trails and like the thrill of getting thrown off than this is probably the trail for you, Otherwise steer clear of this waste of time!

Summary:
Really nice trail, for every "up" there is a nice "down" to get your blood flowing. Fair amount is car noise because of the highway. We were kinda confused because of the sign at the start. It looked like a bike sign with a no entry circle over it. It was apparently for motorcycles.

Recommended Route:
Start at Indian Henry Campground

Other recommended trails in the same area:
McKenzie River
