Banks-Vernonia Trail

This is a great easy trail. The abandoned railroad grade meanders through forests and fields with great views of the surrounding hills and creeks. The gravel and paved surface is very gentle and without technicality. This is a great day ride for your family or friends with rigid bikes or those who haven't been on a ride for years... or do it FAST to get in shape for those EPIC rides you're planning.

Trail Directions
Head out Hwy 26 West of Portland 28 miles to Fisher Rd (just before turn-off for Hwy 47). Turn right on Fisher Rd and go up hill and follow around bend to the right (you're now on Bacona Rd). Turn right into the Park, the trailhead starts on the East side of the parking lot.

Summary:
Short little stents of fun. Watch out for the lips on the jumps a little steep for the size and style. I over cleared one and tore my AC joint. Be careful.

Summary:
Rode the trail from Manning to Vernonia on Sept 28th with my wife. The trail is in excellent shape. About 50% paved, 50% gravel or double track. Fairly level except for one steep hill with loose rock at the Tophill section and some mud or deep gravel in a couple places. The section between Manning and Buxton has been completely repaired. One bridge is still being decked but looks like it will be done any day and you can easily walk your bike over it now. The trail goes through the LL Stub Stewart State Park which has been approved for Mtn Bike trail development and there are some tempting looking trails heading off from this one. While I wouldn't consider the Banks Vernonia trail a Mtn bike trail, it's a great ride if you just want to spin for a few hours without any cars and it could make for an epic day if the trails in Stub Stewart get develped further. Vernonia is a great little town with a bike shop and restaurants.

Recommended Route:
Don't bother with the Manning to Banks section. It dead ends half a mile from Banks and there's no access on that end. No idea why they couldn't push the trail in to Banks. The closed section Vulcangw mentioned has been completely repaired. It was probably damaged during the December 2007 flooding.
Vulcangw is right, those posts are there to keep the cars out. Judging from the damage to some, people try pretty regularly. Most are painted or have reflectors but some don't so you have to keep an eye out for them.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Hagg Lake isn't too far away but I haven't ridden it yet.

Summary:
The Banks Vernonia trail is not complete, and is virtually impassable for about a mile past Manning towards Vernonia. This stretch is unimproved and apparently unmaintained. It is posted as "Trail Closed" and "Hazardous." Well, I thought I would give it a try anyway but turned around after getting to a stretch overgrown with stinging nettles. We turned around and tried the other way, from Manning to Banks. Fine paved trail until you get to the unimproved part about half mile out of Banks. The last several hundred yards is railroad ties, nothing more. Fine if you have a full suspension bike, but have to walk you bike otherwise. FINAL COMMENT. Why do they put posts in the middle of the trail at intersections? My wife ran smack into one. Went head over heals and split her lip wide open. Not good. Granted, she should have looked where she was going (was too close behind me and I apparently blocked her view), but what the heck is a post doing in the middle of the path? Wanting to make sure cares don't enter? Whatever the reason, it is more of a safety hazard than a benefit. Luckily my wife only received a split lip and some abrasions. But she could have broken her neck.

Summary:
Had a nice day here but this "trail" is really a gravel/dirt road. Nothing technical at all. The best thing about this trail is that it can be a good long training ride if you do the whole lenght. Take any level of riders on this trail, newbies will be fine.
Some nice scenery along the way.

out and back the whole way

Summary:
Head to the right out of the parking lot at the Manning trailhead onto the gravel road, cross the bridge, and jog to the left onto the gravel road. The first 3/4 mile is on a gravel road due to no access to the rail road right of way. Once you enter the trail again, the trail is paved to the Buxton Tressel. There is a trail around the tressel with a short killer hill both directions. Buxton tressel is a wonderful little grassey meadow that is kept mowed, and has a creek flowing through the middle. After leaving Buxton, the trail becomes packed gravel until mile 10 from Manning. It then becomes paved for the next 7 miles to Vernonia. Its a 2% upgrade for the first 9 miles, to the top hill tressel, then mostly a gentle down grade for 9 miles to Vernonia. The top hill tressel is not rideable, you must ride around the tessel across highway 47. There is a killer hill both directions,(you have to loose about 150 feet of elevation in a vertical way) with the hill on the Vernonia side being the steepest. Both directions can be climbed/ridden if you have an 18 inch first gear.
The trail is mostly like a packed gravel road, with very little technical skills required. This is a beautiful trip through the woods, and a great saturday workout. Start out early in the morning, to have the trail to yourself all the way to Vernonia. The trail is popular, but if I start a 7 am, I don't start seeing traffic until 3/4 of the way back. This trail is long but gentel, I believe that any one with endurance enough for a 4 to 5 hour trip should have no difficulty negotiating the trail. The trail has park benches every mile or so. There are several places to water your horse,complete with hitching posts. This ride is a must at least once. Bring your pencil, and write in one of the several trail diaries that are placed in (what else) mail boxes along the way. I guarentee that you will shout out with joy several times during the trip due to the beautiful scenery.

Recommended Route:
Drive West on Highway 26 to Hayward Road. Turn Right across the tracks to the Manning Trailhead. From Manning,its 35 miles round trip to the espresso shop in Vernonia. This ride is a must for all skill levels and ages. For those of you that woulld like a place to ride with your young children, the trail is paved for several miles backwards tward Banks, and absolutely level. A wonderful opertunity to take your 6 year old for a peaceful ride with training wheels, and no cars.
