Cook''s Meadows Trail 639

I''m riding it this weekend (7/6/06), so discription will be posted next week.
Head south on hwy35 from Hood River, turn left on to hwy44, go up hwy44 @ 2-4 miles, the trailhead should be your right. Old maps list it as trail 439, but ranger at Dufur said it's now trail 639.
Summary: This is great little trail, make it a loop through high prairie, hit it following an out and back on SRT, or link it with Dog River for a longer ride. It has everything that is great about the area with hints of SRT, Knebal Springs, Dog River, High Prairie, and 8-Mile. The trail had been trashed for years, and dispite you diligently paying for your Forest Pass every year, the Forest Circus never cleared it (Once again proving that the Forest Pass is a double taxation that only works to discourage those less fortunate from being able to enjoy our National Forests...OK, off the soapbox).
Anyway, THE TRAIL IS BACK IN COMMISSION!! I have cleared the trail of down logs most of the debris. The trail does have a couple of small sticks and the bed of the trail needs some help being re-established. So please go out and ride it!...and when you do, try to kick one or more stick(s) off the trail.
This trial was almost left alone to die. MTB'rs don't have an abundance of trails to ride out there. Please help stand up for the ones we still have...become an advocate and make sure your favorite trial is looked after.

Summary: We rode it from the junction of Hwy44/Dog River trail 675/Surveyor's Ridge trail 688 to road 4410, then up road 4410 to High Prairie. @ 6.2 miles one-way.
Take trail 688 for 1 mile and look for the Cooks Meadows trail 639 which veers to the right (old signs show it as trail 439), trail crosses hwy44 then continues up hill for 2.2 miles (18-20% inclines) then drops down 1 mile before coming out onto road 4410.
The Forest Service hasn't cleared this trail of down trees for 2006, call before riding or add an additional 2 hours to finish the ride (Cooks Meadows trail has 30+ down trees forcing you to hikeabike). The last mile was gentle rolling downhill through dense woods.
Plans are calling for volunteers to assist the FS in cutting out down trees after the 06 fire season. A re-design of the trail is in the FS master plan.
Nice downhill trail from High Prairie, and a good way to avoid the heavy traffic on trail 450. Trailhead sign at road 4410 jct is missing, so be on the lookout if coming down road 4410 from High Prairie.
Recommended Route: Down from High Prairie.
