Toothpick

Toothpick is part of the Ashland Trail System. It is not too steep or challenging. It is my favorite trail for pleasant riding, either up or down. If you are not looking for jumps or hairy switchbacks, Toothpick may be right for you. My 60 year old sensibilities love it. It twists through a beautiful forest traversing a steep mountainside. There''s a big drop-off on one side and a wall of forest on the other, but the trail itself is not very steep.
This is also a favorite trail for hikers and dog-walkers, so take care and share the trail. Keep your speed under control when you are descending.
Toothpick is just under a mile long and leaves you a long way from where you started. But the upper trailhead meets the Caterpiller and Lamb Mine trailheads, which are also both pretty easy and fun trails. It makes sense to ride one or both of them and then ride back down Toothpick to your starting point.
Stop by any bike shop or outdoor store in Ashland and pick up a copy of the "3D Topographic Mtn. Biking Map and Guide." This fabulous map shows 40 trails in Ashland, Brown Mountain (Lake of the Woods & Fish Lake), and the Applegate Lake areas. This the best 10 bucks you'll ever spend on mountain biking in the Ashland area. And 5% of the money goes to support trail building and maintenance.
Summary: This is a lovely trail that is not too steep either going up or down. Lots of traffic on weekends, mostly hikers and dog-walkers, especially in the morning.
The trail is easy to pedal, but it is narrow and has a couple of tight corners. I'd rate it for an experienced beginner or intermediate rider. Most of the Ashland Trails are considerably more difficult, so Toothpick is a great trail for those graduating from logging roads to singletrack. Lamb Mine is similarly easy and Caterpiller is a bit more challenging.
Recommended Route: Up or down, it's a great ride. I usually ride the round trip on Toothpick.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Lamb Mine and Caterpiller are of similar difficulty. There are many other, more challenging trails in the Ashland Trail System. Get the 3D map.
