It is mostly asphalt and is five mi. round trip , getting started is an easy straight away and goes along the hwy. stop at the bench and memorial, good view from up here, there is a dirt down hill short cut underneath some power lines and it is very steep and fast way down, if you stay on the asphalt you will see a water fall and riding signs clearly posted and directing you through the streets of Columbia City, come down 4th st.turn r-on L st. turn L-on 3rd. st. then turn L-at signal cross hwy 30 for the other leg of this trail which goes along hwy 30 all the way to shell beach on the river,so bring your sun tan oil and stop at the minute mart for ice creams and drinks
From Portland; take hwy.u.s.30 west to saint helens city, look for deer island road take a right over the tracks and the first left. park at the animal sheltor or the city yard. go to the left off the road down a little hill past a small manufactured home village, and you are there!
Summary: good ride for the beginner, have a 21 speed with clip in pedels for that big hill, other than that very quite and clean, hidden from the road is a small waterfall and a bench with bike racks and a trash cans along the way, i like the swing chair at the minute mart and eating ice-creams with the kids
Recommended Route: same
