Phil's Trail
19 reviews

16 miles more or less of fast, winding, truely amazing singletack through second growth pine. Lots of wildlife, play jump the 'monk. The trails are pretty well marked. If you head West you are going up and out. East and you are heading back to car and town. The main route is marked 24.5 on little bicycle markers. A great trail very close to town

Trail Directions
Ride (or drive) from downtown Bend. Follow the Dechutes river around town which will take you to the Galveston Bridge, cross it. After 2 miles look for a small metal bike sign on the right side of the road. Turn left on paved RD220. When you come to the cross road, park your car, and start your singletrack. (For better directions go to Hutch's or Sunnyside and buy THE Map for 10 smackers, you will not be sorry)

Summary:
Phil's trail is a nice ride for entry level mountain bikers. Even as a desk jockey, the endurance needed is minimal. No steep climbs and paths are all well marked. I was a little shocked to see people mark the aerobic level at 3, but I guess one could loop themselves around all day to create a workout. I didn't find any sections busting my lungs.

Recommended Route:
I took phil's up and looped back on kent's trail. Took about 2 hours.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
We discovered the jump section (to the right of parking area at trail head) which is a nice short course to catch some air. Be warned, some of the gaps are well over 6 feet. It is relatively short, so you can run it multiple times.

Both phil's and kent's trails have small jumps. Nothing too special. While I marked phil's tech level 2, the jumping course is a 5. Don't bring those gimick bike 29ers on these jumps!

Summary:
There is actually way more than 16 miles of trail in the Phil's trail system. Tight twisty trees, great descents, some technical spots, no lung busting climbs but the highlight is the pristine skinny singletrack deep into the forest.

Recommended Route:
I made a 22 mile loop starting at Ben's trail. Ride Ben's about 7 miles through tight trees to road 300, turn right and a quick left onto the double track/ fire road. Easy, steady climb for about 3 miles. A small kiosk on the left will explain the recommended downhill route for the Woopy trail. Continue up the road for another 1/4 mile, there will be singletracks going left and right but keep going up to the Storm king trailhead towards the heli pad. Before the helipad turn right at the sign that says "Bend 16.7 miles". Enjoy the great descent for 5-6 miles with several stinger uphills. Storm king will drop into a double track. Follow the bike sign to COD. Ride COD for another 5 or so miles, paralleling the highway on the right.Great technical spots here. You can eventually find a trail that will drop you off onto the highway. A bit vague but it'll be hard to not find a sweet loop out there.

Summary:
Awesome trails. Phil's trails are actually made up of Ben's Trail, Kent's Trail, and Phil's. The climbing is not difficult. Mainly intermediate in nature. I live in Bend and ride the trail at least 3 times per week during the spring, summer and fall. Easy access and close to town. You can go 35+ miles with variations in one ride.

Enjoy!

Recommended Route:
Start out on Ben's Trail from the Phil's Trailhead and go West. Stay on Ben's Trail all the way up to the turnoff to the Helicopter Pad (8 miles). You can add in Sklyliners Park for a fun variation. Ride down Phil's, Ben's or Kent's Trail back to the trailhead.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Storm King, Deschutes River Trail....

Summary:
okay, i'm a 15 year old from san diego. im used to rough, hard packed rocky trails. these encroaching trees in my opinion are much more of a thrill. not so many strenuous climbs or many blasting downhills, but the downhills are long, fast, and flowing. fun fun fun. found the town i wanna live in. Bend rules. keep riding, rock on

Other recommended trails in the same area:
idk many
