Mount Tabor Park

The park is on a dormant volcano, but don't let that scare you. Short and easy, really only challenging for beginners and intermediates, but still a nice change if you want to avoid the crowds in Forest Park. Some good single track trails on the northwest side of the park, good place to practice without much risk. Also, the trails all lead to the bottom, where you can either head back uphill on the pavement or a different trail. Easy to do six to ten loops of the park in an hour and still get back in time for dinner. Watch out for the fenced off area - dog poop abounds.
Take I-84 east, get off on 60th Avenue or 82nd Avenue and head south. When you hit Division, make a turn - the park is on the north side of the street between these two streets.
Summary: I think most of the reviews are giving Tabor a bad rap. If you do explore and keep your ojos peeled you will find stuff that is totally fun. I look at it as a good place to practice and get a little workout in during the week.
Some of the best looking stuff is blocked off. I am guessing because of wear and tear. However, there are some fun, short, steep little drops. There are some steep climbs as well.
The rock laden whoopty trail, that was mentioned in one of the reviews, is tough to ride up when the rocks are wet...you have to weave in and around looking for a line, as well as keep your ass planted, otherwise you will just spin out. It's tougher than it looks. Also, ride up the hill right behind the hoop courts.....roll along the chainlink fence and drop in on the other side.....tight, somewhat steep with the demand for an immediate turn either left or right at the bottom. Another cool little tech drop. On muddy days, you pretty much skid down.
Also, if anyone can climb that hill that leads right up to the water fountain at the top, I'll be impressed. Tough as hell not to spin out. It's steep enough to where you pretty much have to stand but you need to position your body as if you are sitting so it's unorthodox and tiring to do. Worth checking out.
I dont know...I dig it quite a bit and I have ridden plenty of "legit" spots (for lack of a better word), downhill at ski resorts, x country.....whatever.
Recommended Route: Your imagination...you can make it more fun if your mind is open.

Summary: trails are ok if you live near by. i got bored and decided to make the jaunt down from the couv and i can't say i'll be back. every time i came along a person walking their dog or walking, they gave me dirty looks. maybe i had a booger hanging out of my nose or something. i was just there to check the place out, not to bomb down the hills. oh, well.
Recommended Route: find the park on a map or portland and follow it.

Summary: I am very lucky because I am one of the few who live only 2 minutes away by bike to the base of Mt. Tabor. This allows me to go far more frequently than I would advise anyone else to do.The only reason for this is I just don't think it would be nearly as much fun if you had to drive there or travel any real distance on your bike. Sure it is plenty of fun. There is a giant paved road that you can ride all the way to the top. Once there, you are atop a beautiful scenic loop at which you can see excellent views of Downtown Portland,Greasham, Mt. Hood, and on a nice clear day you will even get a fair peek at Mt. St. Helens. The downside to such splendor you ask? Well, you better soak up the view quick, because 9 months out of the year, the water reservoirs attract such an insane amount of mesquittos, You will be miserable in a matter of MOMENTS. In fact, it is so bad, nevermind the view. Don't even get off your bike. You will thank me later. As you approach the south side of the summit loop, you can take either of the dirt paths on the right of the statue, or go parallel to the stairway directly in front, and you see where the fun begins. This is the spooky fast downhill that makes it all worth while.Though short and sweet, it is OH SO SWEET.You can easily do this lap dozens of times in a day. Mt. Tabor is a well manicured park in the center of South East Portland. The good part is, if you eat s#!t on the trail, (at a decent hour) There will always be a dog walker or a jogger just a stones throw away to hear you screaming for help.At the same time, the bad part is there will always be a dog walker or a jogger just a stones throw away.........so be careful. This is probably the most crowded place I have ever rode my bike at speeds approaching "creepy dangerous".The more people walking the trails, the more dangerous it gets for all.On a warm summer day, you might want to avoid the crowds and just do some singletrack in the food court at the mall !!!!YES, IT IS THAT BAD AT TIMES!!So, as I stated earlier. This is a good place to go if you will have no trouble getting here. If it will take you 15 minutes to drive here, please let me suggest the trails at Larch mountain. It would only be an extra 15-20 minutes, but MUCH more rewarding. Eveeryone else, within riding distance, I would like to invite you to a LOCAL FUN PARK!!!The closer you are, the better it is !!! I will give Mt. Tabor an overall rating of 2. It would be a 3 or 4 if it wasn't so crowded,(but what can be expected in the center of a city?!?!)It also could have swung down so low as a 1 rating. But its accessability and multiple trail options saved its skin.
Recommended Route: From Division, I would suggest turning north on 60th until you hit your first traffic light. Go right at the light. (that goes without saying once you get there... you can see the mountain !!!) Drive up into the belly of the beast.(there is parking all throughout)
Other recommended trails in the same area: The Larch mountain trails are great. Someone also carved out some pretty impressive trails above Rhododendron.(I guess that isn't too close)
