Gray Butte Loop

Climbing dual track to single track. Single track is rolling ups and downs and great panoramic view of high desert and Cascade mountain range.
From Redmond, travel North on Hwy 97 to Terrebone. Turn right on Smith Rock road for four miles. At the intersection with Lone Pine Road, turn left and go three miles to road 5710. Park here at the Grasslands Campground. Approximately 14 miles from Redmond.
Summary: Try This Loop! You get to ride incredible grassland with massive Cascade views, springs, miles of rolling downhill singletrack, two technical downhill sections, ride past huge cliffs. This one has everything.
The whole loop is long but rewarding. You have to ride about 8 miles on paved road to get from Smith Rock to the trailhead; otherwise use two cars to shuttle.
Recommended Route: From Smith Rock to the Gray Butte Trailhead: Start at Smith Rock parking area. Exit the area via the entrance road and turn left at the T junction. Ride to Smith Rock Rd. and turn left, and left again at Lone Pine Road 2 miles ahead. Pedal for several miles to Skull Hollow Road and turn left. 3 more uphill miles to the trailhead. After a sharp dip in the road look for a gravel loop parking area on the left side.
Gray Butte Trail: Trail starts at edge of parking area heading west. Trail rolls a but for the first mile, then starts uphill, passing a telephone pole on the west shoulder of Gray Butte. Continues up a bit, passing an obvious cliff overlook on the right. There is a plaque 50m off the trail commentorating a trail planner who dies near that spot.
From the overlook the trail begins a traverse. Next is the first technical downhill section with a few switchbacks. Then traverse and roll around other shoulders (fun!) with an ocassional uphill. Pass through a gate and keep going. Follow signs back to Smith Rock, mostly downhill.

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: This trail is sacred in location and is a place where only northwest native americans tread 10,000 years ago. For best view, climb to peak above Burma Road, gasp at view, understand where you are standing. Catch trail again. Look for rock shrines on the way. 18 mile loop possible. Couple steeps, couple technicals, lush rollers. Intermediates and up......and don't wine when you have to climb.
Recommended Route: Park at Smith Rock. Warm up by crossing wooden bridge on Crooked River and heading left.Enjoy crazy rock climbers. Turn back,,go up Burma Road, hook up with Grey Butte.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Anything starting at Phil's in Bend, like Tumalo.

Summary: Worth throw'n the bike in with the climbing ropes. Good way to spend a day resting from the beautiful cliffs at the state park. Deer everywhere so you better install that new titanium cow catcher on the front of your ride. The mountains are spectacular and laying on the rocks will warm ya like a lizard.

Ridden Trail: Once a week

Summary: Expect three miles of climbing on a gravel road. From the trail head, follow the well marked trail. I found it impossible to get lost. The only trail in the area is this trail. There are connections to Burma Road at Smith Rock, but I've yet to see the junction. The trail is very rideable year round. On snow days, take a chance to ride in about two or three inches of snow. The downhill single track lies in the snowy area and follows a sidehill creek back to 5710. Skill level is beginner to intermediate except for the downhill part. This section is fast and offers technical areas for more advanced riders. Beginners will need to be heavy on the brakes for the first few times. Otherwise this trail is great for everyone. Advanced and expert riders will find sections challenging and beginners will not be scared off. Enjoy the scenery. Take a camera and get mountain shots from Mt Bachelor to the south to Mt. Adams to the north.
Recommended Route: Follow road 5710 to Gray Butte TH. Three miles from the vehicle parking area. From the TH, follow five miles of single track back to 5710 and back to car parking area. I suggest counter clockwise direction to fully utilize the single track downhill.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Burma Road Loop, Smith Rock.
