Gorge Trail #400
3 reviews
 4 of 5

A moderately easy out and back ride. The ride starts with a somewhat steep 1 mile climb, with a 2 mile gradual downhill to Eagle Creek. One of Oregon's many treasures, the Gorge is home to beautiful scenery and vegetation that at times seems unreal.

Summary:
Ok so i started mountain biking a couple months ago. My friend and his dad took me on this trail as my first ride, theyve been riding for 3 years. The trail is fairly smooth through out, its an awesome single track though. My first time the first 1 or so climb kicked my a$$. The rest of the ride though was pretty much rolling hills and some steep switch backs going down. I was dead by the time we reached the turnaround lol. The trail is really smooth and fun and i think ive ridden it 2 times now and seen 1 other person on it, a local jogger. Its a fun trail, short and sweet at 13 miles with some good climbs too. I would reccomend this trail to anyone, im taking my cousin and friend for their first ride on it tomoro. =p

Recommended Route:
Parking lot, to down the hill where the trail head is. then follow that till you hit the road. Go up the road and... i dont remember the rest lol. its really self explanitory. lol

Other recommended trails in the same area:
In the area theres Sincline, which a gruesome 3.5 mile climb all in the sun. (dont reccomend that unless your going for a hard workout) Then theres powell butte in Gresham, fun park to ride in, usually isnt to crowded, lots of trails there and good climbs. i like to practice my switchbacks there.

Ive been riding this trail 20 years twice a year , in the 90s you would see alot of bikers ,but for some reason nobody rides it anymore, the only people i see is trail crews working on it ,so i guess we have are own personel singletrack, its close to portland and there are options to make this trail difficult. If thats what your looking for.

Recommended Route:
start from bonniville exit coming from portland ,trailhead on the right .Climb 1 mile 4-6% come to gravel rode (turn right to climb up tanner creek 4 miles 6-15% all the way) left will bring you down to sharp left in rode ,take R puts you back on trail 400 go down.(very fast DH at times with BIG drops off the side )Cross bridge quick L then R go through day campground up for 100 yards, you will see a trail with a small ditch in front of it.This is 400 again at the bottom of the hill R on rode ,take rode up then down for approx 2 miles take trail on R follow for 3 miles reach pacific crest trail.Turn around and go back(14 mile out and back ,add tanner creek makes it a good day 22 miles 2500 vert)

Summary:
I rode this trail last Summer. Very steep uphill climb right off the bat with virtually no time to warm up.

I am new to Portland from SoCal and was looking for some cool trails. My brother and I rode this trail and we did not see ANY BIKERS or ANYONE else the whole ride, and this was mid-Summer in the am. The trail was pretty overgrown in parts, and lot of spiders.

Quite a technical trail because of the steepness and the fact that you are biking on a tight single track up the gorge. If you lose your balance and go over the trail it is quite a fall down.

I swerved off the trail once because I had gone through a huge spider web and freaked out a little. No big deal b/c luckily some bushes caught my fall.

I don't think I would go back, or not at least until I have tried some other trails in Portland.

If you like steep single track and not afraid of heights and spiders, you may enjoy this trail.
