fish lake or lake of the woods
4 reviews

This trail has a wide variety of sections. From fish lake the trail is hard pack and about four feet wide. About five miles into the trail in turns to single trake that ranges from rocky to gravel. After Fish Lake the trail is technical single track. Great views that range from lava type rocks, beautiful forest sections, and views of both lakes.

Summary:
Great trail. I rode the trail with my 7 year old son and pulling my 2 year old dtr. We had a great time. My son could ride most of the trail. He got off and walked 2 times. I than rode the trail by my self as fast as I could. Lots of fun. Very fast and fun. I rode from Fish Lake to Lake of The Woods. Not real tec. But very fast. If it is a weekend whatch out for other riders.

Recommended Route:
Next time i will make a loop out of the Brown Mtn trail and this trail. Maybe ending with lunch at Fish Lake.

Summary:
From Sunset campground on the east side of Lk of the Woods, go to the beach where you will start on the forested trail starting north. Make your way around the lake edge to Aspen CG. This is all flat and easy. Great for kids, beats riding forest roads and is comparable to a Rail-Trail built over some small hills of basalt. Come to Brown Mtn. trail intersection about 3 miles from start, northwest of the lake. We ran into snow here on June 1 and Brown Mtn. looked impassable within 50 yards of the start. Continue along the north flanks of Brown Mountain, an extinct volcanoe with basalt piles at the base. Make your way over the basalt piles with no more than 400 feet climbing for the next 6 miles. You drop about 600 feet to Fish Lake, where you can turn back, do the Fish Lake trail (as I did) or continue on to the Brown mtn trail in reverse. I did this trail (26 miles total) with my 5 year old daughter behind me on a trail-a-bike in about 4 hours total, not including lunch etc. Three years ago I rode it with my children behind me in a bike trailer. Great trail for beginners and kids who are learning some mtn bike skills (hills, some bumps, wide/generous single trek). Intermediate and advanced riders will be disappointed unless they enjoy some of the unique features this trail offers (riding on basalt slopes).

Recommended Route:
Start at the snow-park meadow off 140 for day use and use Sunset or Aspen campground for overnight.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Brown Mtn. has some wonderful glades for backcountry skiers that are fairly accessable during good snow years. My daughter and I also did the South Fork of the Rogue Mtn Bike Trail the following day and found it 1/2 as long as the above but more challenging and tiring.

Summary:
This is a good workout (especially on the return) for both beginners and intermediate riders. You skirt the Great Meadow where you can see all sorts of wildlife on early morning rides. The trail through the lava flows is really neat. Stop and wander out onto the flow and explore.

Recommended Route:
Start at the Sno-Park area at the Great Meadow. Then follow the trail from the lot to Fish Lake and then back.
