Summary:
This is on County land.
Good trail for beginner and trail training.
Lots of short trail in area.
A good ten mile loop if go the long way.
I have rode this about 10 time in the past year.

Recommended Route:
Starting at the end of Elk lane at a large parking area.
Go through the iron gate and head up the jeep trail to the top.
At about .25 mile you come to a saddle, go Right and head up the hill on a jeep trail, at about 1 mile from parking area, you come to another saddle.
You will use gears 1-1 up to 2-4 in this part of the ride.
Go Right and down the hill on the jeep trail for about 2 miles, till you come to Stringer Gap Rd. You could go back now, by going right on the road back to the parking are. Or go on from here.
This is the good part.
Cross over the road, go around the cable (still county land)head up the single track, stay to the Left and head up the hill for about 2 miles to a fork, go Right and start down the hill. You will come near houses but its ok. You will come out at the top of Midway Ave.
Go down Midway, turn Right on Demaray Drive.
Turn Right on Sand Crk Rd. and ride up to Elk lane and turn right on Elk lane and head back to the parking area.
About 10 miles.

Reviewed by: Hans & sam. , from Grants Pass

Summary:
Elk Lane consists mostly of an old log road with some singletrack branching off here and there. Two nice climbs and some great views. The main road isn't that challenging -- very wide, fairly smooth (mostly), and the grade is generally not really steep (with some exceptions) -- it's a great place to take beginners. Some of the singletrack is pretty extreme, but limited in length. Fairly large place -- fun to explore, but after you've gone everywhere there is to go here, you quickly realize there's a lot better riding elsewhere nearby. Still, not a bad place to ride. Beware the property line on the south end, which is well-marked in most places.

Recommended Route:
from Grants Pass, go west on Hwy 199, turn left onto Bushnell Dr. and follow the road until you come to the cul-de-sac at the end -- the trail starts there. Plenty of parking available.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Taylor Creek Trail, just outside Merlin, is tops. In Grants Pass, check out Cathedral Hills Park.

Summary:
Yes, Elk Lane has a good climb to the top (worth the effort) once you find the sweet single track downhill.
It is fast, tight, scenic and fun. There are several
other trails on the mountain. The area is worth exploring. You will encounter motor cycles and horses as well as other friendly mtn bikers. I ride with some
intermediate level ladies from my riding group there.
gotta ride now...bye kathleen
