Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Cross Country Rider Summary: I rode this the other day. The forest road up to the summit of Cache Mountain is a nice aerobic climb not a lung buster. Finding the single track was a bit challenging and once on it there was a lot of blowdown and the trail is becoming over grown in some areas. It is a shame because it would be a great single track with excellent sweeping views. There are section that are rideable but be prepared to carry your bike over downed trees. I cleared a few impassable trees but it would take a dedicated effort get this trail up to ridable standards. At the bottom the trail on the south side of Scout Lake is unridable there is a trail on the north side that is passable and most of the trail to Dark lake can be ridden.

Cross Country Rider Summary: Unriddeable near Scout Lake due to blowdown, and lack of use. No trail markers. Could not find the trail after riding up to the forestry road. Waste of time.

, from Rickreall, OR Summary: Did this one in a race once. OK for a sigletrack due to the lack of such in many of the races around. All I remember is hail in August and dust a foot deep. Wish I would have brought my CR instead. Recommended Route: Start in parking lot, get in car and drive elsewhere. Other recommended trails in the same area: McKenzie River

, from Redmond,OR USA Summary: From Scout Lake to Dark Lake was a hard uphill. Very steep but short lived. I found it difficult because the water had washed much of the soil away leaving exposed roots and holes unrideable uphill. The fallen timber had not been cleared out when I last rode either. Once to the road and the uphill climb to the top begins. It's a fairly simple climb. Uphill of course but never strenuous. If you don't mind grinding for a while, you will like this part of the ride. Now the views are spectacular. If you want to go sightseeing, drive your car though. The trail off the mountain has much to be desired. It's a washed out creekbed and downed trees galore. Overgrown brush and shrubs have all but closed the trail. There is no thrill in face-smacking and cut up arms and legs. Most of the time I was stopped to cross logs, walk under brush and take my time because there is no foresight. You get to see about 10 feet in front of you and then wallow in the brush. Not a good ride at all. Like I said, the only great thing about this ride is the conditioning from the climb and the view. Other than that, find another place to ride where you can have fun and enjoy some great single track. Recommended Route: As stated on the maps and the entry at the beginning. Other recommended trails in the same area: Phil's Trail in Bend.
