start off on fire road you come to
quick 3way stay to the left up three rolling hills past a barn on the left then stop by some extra drainage pipes and you can see the area pretty good ,we want to proceed north, 3way stay right
little downhill then another 3 way
stay to left then go up small grade
but pretty long single track starts there, i put a broom stick
with inner tube box turn right grassy bottom with blackberrys to deal with it has a lot of down hill
with great views of the columbia and interstate 5. it has mushrooms
growing everywhere,it turns down south towards columbia city, comes out at the bottom 3way(should be some power lines)turn right up a small hill, from there you should have great view, hold on this gnarly trial is'nt over, follow this fire road down a very fast but rocky road with speeds up to
35mph then hit jump at the 3-way,if you down and left there will be the first gate off smith
rd.,if go past the jump look for a single track at the dead end, single track is well maintained is
pretty good climb but shady, comes to a three way, should be a old rambler stipped out,if you go left and down it takes you back to smith
road somewhere between the two gates, if you stay to right and go up it should take you back up to main fire road, but have'nt done it yet, another thing if you miss the single track you will come to 4way
9 o'clock trial has beer can hanging from it has single trail and does come out,the 3 o'clock trail goes down into a dead end,ok if your looking for deer, the 11 o'clock trial goes to blue gate and another awesome single track with roots, rocks and tricky decent which comes back to the same fire road, turn left to head back, or turn right and onto a 4way left looks like single track but it is quad track, straight is a long down hill single track, not sure where it comes out but it was fun both ways, and if go right it should be a well maintain fire rd ,that goes towards columbia meadows and the same fire road with power lines that go back to smith rd. any futher into the bush
you bound to come out on cannon rd. off deer island town, I been out there looking for trials on my
truck and found lots of trials, but none of them are long,to steep to climb, or dead ends, this area
of smith road is awesome, take any gate and your bound to find somthing, try dart creek rd. and smith rd. blue gate.2nd right is downhill single track that is a short 5 minute run turn left on bottom fire rd, go up to little honda civic and return back up a
qaud track, there is a bunch of them all over this place, I'never stop exploring, plus there is so much wilderness to see.
Summary: This trail network isn't half bad actually. I've been here many times and have never seen another person on any of the trails, it is very peaceful.
There is some singletrack, some downhill sections, nothing too technical.
If you live in the Saint Helens area its a great place to ride after work. If you live in Portland its not really worth driving that far for. There is some better riding in Scappoose
Recommended Route: From Saint Helens: Take Highway 30 northwest to Columbia City. Turn left at the mini-mart in Columbia City. Stay on this road as it become gravel. Just before you get to the top of this road there is a gate on the right. If you have reached an intersection and the road becomes paved again you have gone too far.
Park near the gate and follow the main logging road for 1.4 miles and you will come to another gate. One of the trails begins just to the right of this gate.
There are a few different trails in the area. Exploring is the best way to figure out which ones to ride.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Scappoose freeride area (off Rocky Point Road)
Siouxon Creek
Brown's Camp
Gales Creek
Forest Park
Powell Butte

Summary: this is a short run, 1 hour tops for return loop, back to the top. if you go past single track or if you are looking to go further in the bush, go to the four way and take the 11 o/clock road and go past gate go down a straight away and left comes up the hill and dumps off the other cool single track, this was very rocky and bumpy one and was fun both ways.
this fire road comes to a four way 9 o'clock dead ends 12 o'clock a single track that is short 1/2 mile then goes to the right to so more fire roads,to the left more single track about 1/2 mile then dead ends. back to the 4 way the 3o'clock fire road goes to maple mountain or to deer island if you got a map or keep reading my reviews.
Recommended Route: take hwy 30 to columbia city west turn right at a st. by the minit-mart /gas station. take that up to a dirt road that turns up the canyon. welcome to timber country, the first gate on the right is about a half mile up ,the second gate is on the left,1 mile up. the third gate on the right is the one to columbia meadows
Other recommended trails in the same area: smith road dead end ,do not park by the gate, go back all the way to axil road intersection to park

Summary: great climbs, well maintained fire roads, some trees on the ground and many trails to ride on,single track is down hill,go to the four way on top of the hill
go to 11 o"clock fire road which bends down to the right, you should be inside the tree cover by now,at the bottom of this straight away is a gate, look for single track on the right,it is very hard terran because the quad-riders use as an uphill climb,it was a fun all the way to the bottom. return home the same route
Recommended Route: take hwy.u.s. 30 west from portland to columbia city. turn left on A st. go past minimart,A st. turns into smith rd. it is
a dirt rd. look for the second gate on the right. also you can go to msn.com and

Summary: this is a big area with very remote locations, this trail reminds me of wild
wood in forest park, has views of the river
and the foothills of columbia county are
killer, this trail had a lot single track
and nothing in the way of a killer down hill loop. I've been looking for a trail
like this for a long time, this whole area has many places to ride, it feels like i own the whole dam thing, i never see any other riders out there. e-mail me at gvalm@comcast.net
Recommended Route: hwy 30 west to columbia city, left on a st.
which turns into smith rd. it is a dirt road for about 3 mi. look for blue gate on the right, if you come to a stop sign
you gone to far,it is the second gate on the right.
