Return on the Jedi

See attached web page for the "Return on the Jedi" complete mountain bike race course. The race that was held Aug 22, 1999 had 3 levels of skill for all racers. Some fast and fun single track, some fire road and some goregours scenery
Summary: This is a really fun singletrack with a full bag of options--it's about 10 miles from where I grew up, but never hit it until this summer (05). My brother and I parked at Sam Brown campground (13-14 miles up Taylor Creek Road--from Grants Pass, just follow the signs to Galice, then take a left on Taylor Creek) and cruised through the Taylor Creek Trail (AKA Return on the Jedi), then rode back up the pavement. There is quite a bit of traffic right now because of some road outages between Galice and the coast, so all of coast-bound traffic is travelling on the Taylor Creek road (MOSTLY one way--watch out for the crazies). If you dig the single, many different options are available, including a sweet ride out to Onion Mountain (to do this fall). BUT.....If you like smoking fast downhill riding on abused gravel roads, do as we did...
After riding to the terminus of the Jedi trail, ride back up the pavement, and take a right hand turn onto the main Forest Service gravel road (detour signs point the way) and ride to the top of the ridge (about 5 miles). The view is totally worth the trouble you will soon experience; beautiful views of the Cascades to the East and the coast range everywhere else--some of the Biscuit burn is there too. From the top of the ridge, you can either ride back down the way you came (completely unrecommended though, due to the one way traffic), or you can do as we did....ride the very fast gravel road (Chrome Ridge) down for about 7 miles. You'd better have another car or a shuttle available if you do this because it is about 24 miles back to your car from this point ('cause it's a one way).
The Chrome Ridge road also links back up with a monster series of roads/trails that tie most of the mountains within a 50 mile radius together. This is truly one of the best places around to ride, but it is virtually untapped.
My brother and I are working on some serious trails on Peavine Mountain that will eventually hook up with the Chrome Ridge road, the micro-village of Galice, and the Wild and Scenic portion of the Rogue River. Like Oakridge, this little gem has a little bit of every outdoor activity you can imagine (talk to Joe and Elena at the Sundance Kayak School just down the road from Galice if you want to do some awesome boating while in the area). Drop me an email if you're interested in first descents of our trails.
Recommended Route: Choose your own adventure--that's the beauty of wheels.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Our secret rides on Peavine--just watch out for rattlesnakes and cougars.

Summary: just an update, this trail is still awesome, awesome, awesome!! i rode yeserday march 21 in the hieght of spring and it was beautiful! lots of creeks moss ferns etc. the soil was great, a little damp. i love the sper fast rolling, smooth roller coasters stuff, a blast. i saw only 2 hikers the whole day on ther trail. there was some winter dead fall, but not too bad. the coolest parts is that i saw a BEAR! he was chiilin in a little grove by meadow by a creek and ran away as soon as he saw me. don't worry he wasn't near the trail. though i did see his foot prints on the onion trail (a continuation of the same trail, just past sam brown camp ground0. i also say evidence of cougers. there was a dead rabbit on the trail on the way up that was gone on the way down. anyways the trail was great and now is the time to ride.
Other recommended trails in the same area: i suggest checking out the Cook-n-Green trail. it is similair to the Jedi. rolloing smooth and fun. cookngreen is over by applegate lake and not ridden too much. it is also a good ride in the summer cuz it follows a creek and goes up to like 6000'. it gets you into the heart of the red buttes wilderness. look at a topo of the applegate area by the upper applegate river. email me if you want to ride!

Ridden Trail: Every few months

Summary: felt the need to update the review on this gem of a trail. rode it last week, curious about the fire from last year, but all is well there, no signs of fire. very little poison oak and the creeks are flowing. not a long ride but worth the drive. unless your a rodie, take the trail back to the top, its way mo' better......
Recommended Route: start at trail head at road junction, blast down the jedi, at bottom of trail turn left at gate, horse medow, follow the old rode about a mile, you will see a single track that takes off to the left, follow that to the top. take the gravel road back to where you parked....any questions call richard at bikecraft...cool store.

Ridden Trail: Every few months
Reviewed by: Sanger

Summary: Once you get through the grueling nine mile uphill and somewhat technical and fast downhill fire road, let the fun begin! Where the Jedi Trail starts its a smooth, slightly undulating trail, however pleasing. Once the backside begins its all downhill and heavily forested and needs to be ridden once slowly to enjoy the spectacular Southern Oregon scenery. The second time for bombing purposes!
Recommended Route: Start to finish and back again, including the (9) mile uphill.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Call the Forest Circus, uh...I mean Service
