Mary's Peak- North Ridge

A very technical trail that almost feels like the north shore. Not too steep but with some tough switchbacks and technical sections and great dropoffs. This trail is the best in the area by far. East ridge is also nic e but shorter and not as difficult.
Drive either from Philomath up Woods Creek road to get to the bottom and ride up, or you can drive up the highway from philomath to the top of Mary's and ride down, then up. Riding up first is reccomended because after coming down you will not want to ride up.
Summary: This trail kicks butt! There are definitely some technical areas that most will need to walk, but there are a few spots where a rider can be callenged and want to try. There are also some technical areas where the trail is ridable, but the penalty for failure could be costly (exposure makes some spots a little sketchy). This was probably the most technical trail I had been on before visiting Moab and doing Porcupine Rim, Slickrock, etc. We rode the trail in June and it was in great shape. This is one of my favorite local trails, along with the McKenzie River Trail.
Recommended Route: Park @ gate at the end of Woods Creek Rd and go up the gravel road until you reach the Eastridge Trail. Take Eastridge to top of the peak (nice views from the tower) then go down the Northridge Trail back to the gate.
Other recommended trails in the same area: McKenzie River Trail (1.5 hours from Corvallis)
Waldo Lake Trail & Lemish Lake Trail (2.25 hours away from Corvallis)
Black Rock in Falls City (40 minutes from Corvallis)
Bend area trails (2 hours from Corvallis)
McDonald and Dunn Forests (10 minutes from Corvallis) There are tons of awesome trails in the McDonald and Dunn Forests in Corvallis. Lots of smooth singletrack and enough technical stuff to make most happy!
Let me know if you are looking to come and ride in Corvallis.

Summary: I can't believe that I rode this for the first time after living in Oregon for 15 years. Rode on 6/10/07 in a pretty solid downpour with a couple of friends. Went up the East ridge to the summit (sweet climb with a couple of nice pitches and fun root moves), put the headphones on and let it rip.
The roots on this descent were super slippery, like my ex's tongue after a women's rugby party. Nuff said. Bailed a couple of moves, but might have pulled it off on a dry day. This was one of the most fun rides I have done and as good as Moon Point, Crawfish, Lawler, or about any other up and down in Western Oregon. Can't wait to go again.
Recommended Route: Ride up East Ridge, Down North Ridge, seems like a no-brainer. North Ridge would be difficult to ride up.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Mac Forest has a lot of trails

Summary: Awesome trail. 3000 feet of elevation, rocky, rooty, technical fun. Most parts are rideable (maybe all if you've got skillz) and a blast to come down. You are descending a tight, steep, technical, singletrack trail from the highest peak in the coast range.
Get a map of the area at peak sports and bring a compass, plenty of water, and food.
Recommended Route: Drive up woods creek road to the gate. Ride gravel road to conners camp, ride east ridge trail to the parking lot, go out to the summit (across the meadow) for lunch and a break, ride the north ridge trail down.
If you are lame, you can drive a car up to the parking lot and ride down.

Summary: This is probably my favorite trail. I love Mary's Peak, and this ride seems to embody everything about the mountain. It's very technical in places, and, like others have said, pretty close to unrideable in a couple spots. Rumor has it that a handful of people have ridden the whole way up--I'm not in the handful. Last time I rode it, it was 100 degrees in Corvallis, and a perfect 72 in the trees up on the peak.
Take HWY 34 through Corvallis, and a mile or so outside of Philomath, take a right on Woods Creek Road, and drive to the top. You will know when you get to where you want to be--it's an obvious, large, dirt parking area and a gate.
I get a little frustrated jumping out the pedals to clamber over the real technical stuff, but it's all more than worth it once you start cruising. And damn is it close to Corvallis. Heck yea.
Recommended Route: Ride up the gravel road that's on the other side of the gate. This will spit you out just above Conner's Camp, at the East Ridge Trailhead. I like to ride the East Ridge all the way to the top (~3 miles). Ride down the gravel road at the top until you get to the parking area. The North Ridge Trail starts just after the parking area (it's all well marked).
Other recommended trails in the same area: Mac Forest--the king of great trails. There's something for everyone here.

Summary: The north ridge is 4 miles of prime technical single track. There are a lot of rooted sections that are rideable and at least 3 or 4 that are not (unless you have very good bike handling skills and/or armor). Because there are so many rooted sections I would not recommend riding this trail soon after a rain. I rode this trail on 9/05, a few days after some wet weather, and it was perfect. You'll want to take east ridge trail up. It's a tough climb, but it's cleanable except for one section. going up N. ridge is not recommended, unless you like walking.
Recommended Route: Take hwy. 20 west out of philomath about 2mi., take a left on woods creek rd. and take that for 2-3 miles until you reach the gate (there will be a partking area to the left). Ride past the gate (the bottom of N. ridge trail will be on you right a few yards after the gate) and stay on the road for about 3 miles until you get to another gate (and the paved rd. up marys peak), this is where E. ridge trail starts. Take E. ridge until you come to a split in the trail, go up to the left and this will take you to the parking lot near the top of the peak. From here take a right at the parking lot to find N. ridge trail and enjoy the ride.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Mac Forrest
