Gales Creek Trail

Out/Back trail, 6.8 miles one way. Put on your climbing shoes out is pretty much all up. The ride back is fast and fun. I say the climb is worth it, this could be a topic of debate.

Summary:
Super fun single track. We chose to climb the road to the top and then drop back down on the singletrack. Worth the grueling logging road climb. Actually, the climb isn't that bad, I'm just a little out of shape.

Recommended Route:
I don't know yet, only ridden it once.

Summary:
Pretty good trail, and not too far from Portland. The climbs were pretty grueling and I ended up walking like 3 times. Whoever posted this trail on this website says its an out and back but you can make a loop very easily. Check out the map at the trailhead and create your own route. I think I'll combine this trail with the University Falls/Browns camp trail next time I do this.
There are a few trails that start from the gales creek campground. They all seem pretty fun but they all have a lot of uphill.

Recommended Route:
review the map and go exploring.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Browns Camp, Hagg Lake

Summary:
There are a couple different loop trails that you can ride out of this campground. The trail that leads out of the South side of the campground will take you up towards the bottom of Storyburn Road, which is near the start of the Brown's Camp loop. The Northern most trail that heads out of the camp leads towards the upper part of Storyburn Road (where the Gravelle Brother's Trail starts) or further up Storyburn Road near where you can drop in towards the town of Timber. Both of these routes are big time climbs, going towards Gravelle Brothers takes around 45 minutes and probably around an hour to climb to the top on the Timber side. The loop that my friends and I usually take is the Southern trail out of the camp that leads towards Brown's Camp. We head up this trail which is usually very wet, even in the summer. We then cross Highway 6 and do the Brown's Camp loop...see the Brown's Camp Trail (http://www.mtbr.com/trails/Oregon/BrownsCamp.html).
When you are almost done with the Brown's Camp loop part of the ride, we go up the Gravelle Brother's trail which about a two mile of so of uphill. This trail puts you out onto Storyburn Road about three miles North of Highway 6.
At this point of the ride you have a couple ways to go. You can just cross over the gravel road and go back towards Gales Creek, about an hour ride back to the car from here. If you are feeling like riding a bit more, you can take a left and head up Storyburn Road about seven miles and take a left on Standard Grade. At this point, you will probably be passing through or will have just passed through some logging operations. Be careful. The trail around 5 miles of gravel road/double track from here to the top of the trail that heads back into the North side of Gales Creek Campground. We are not sure of the name of the trail that heads down towards the campground, we just know that it is about six miles long, so we call it the six mile trail??? This route makes for a ride around 30 miles. It turns out to be a ride of a few hours, so bring lots of water and an extra energy bar. For more information about this area you can get a hold of us at www.mountainbikewith.us

Recommended Route:
North off Highway 7 into the Gales Creek parking lot is the best place to park. This way always ends with downhills.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Timber, Hagg Lake, Archers Fire Break, Diamond Mill

The original reviewer wrote "There are 2 trails if you look at the map". Actually, you can make an awesome loop out of this. Turn off the highway onto the gravel road to gales creek. Keep a sharp eye out on the left side of the road for a trail coming out. Park right across from it. Ride up the trail until you get to the high way. Cross the highway (you'll be at the entrance to Browns Camp). Ride to the opposite side of the gravel pit. Drop into the trail (the trail is literally like 10 feet from the highway). Ride down the hill. Keep your helmet on here because it's kind of rough. When you reach a fork, take a right. This will go up hill and in 1/4 mile go under the highway. Keep on climbing until you reach the gravel road (like 2 miles). This is pretty much the summit. Cross the open gravel turnout and start on one of the most awesome downhill singletrack around.
