smooth to nasty, good for full suspension and hardtails if you use strong tubes and soft shoch settings. not alot of jumps but the change in terrain can make you eat dirt real fast, There is a few hidden trails with a few stunts setup but i dont like to exploit this place after looking at the cover of the Aug issue of BIKE magazine
You'll have to either head up Ashland loop rd or Toleman Creek. there are some many trails up here that its kind of hard to really tell you. Off of Ashland Loop there are at least 10 sinle track routes either along the road or they start from it. The Loop Road goes for 28+ miles so you can imagine how many trails are there. hang with the locals and youll find out pretty quick how in shape you are since the nearest sinlge track is a 3-4 mile climb.
Summary: This is a commentary on Ashland trails in general from a XC guy who is NOT a local (unlike the rest of the reviewers) after four annual visits and probably 150 miles. Ashland desperately needs a trail building/maintenance group, and for the most part I suggest they start over. There are a few isolated sections of buff singletrack, but generally what you will find is trails far too steep and gnarly to ride up, or even to ride down for that matter. You ride up on the road, and ride down the road too, with a few miles here and there of singletrack. The bike of choice is 5"+ FS, downhill geometry. Parts of Catwalk are practically too gnarly even to hike-a-bike. Trails appear to have been ridden into existence rather than designed, built, and maintained, and are in generally very poor shape due to erosion and abuse (heavy skidding). If you live in town I'm sure it beats watching tv, but Ashland is no MTB destination. Next year I will try some of the rides nearby but away from town.
Recommended Route: Don't really have one. The winding asphalt back to town is fast, smooth, and fun...like the trails should be. If you are under 35, and have 5+" travel bike and a full set of armor you should catch a ride to the top of Mt. Ashland and ride from there.

Summary: Short, very short. If you are into longer trails, take BTI at the end. It goes down to lithia park and is basicallt the same but it's steeper and longer. If you like lots of water bar jumps that are mid sized, take this trail. It is all downhill.
Recommended Route: Head up morton, till you get to loop road. Continue up this till you pass a green gate and the grade levels out. There is a trail head on your left. This is it.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Other trails are tooth pick (not good going from Tolman, but going down TO it), Contour, Cat Walk, White Rabbit (horrible), and Time Warp (the best)

Summary: Cat walk is a soft and giving trail, make sure your tires are in good shape, so you don't slide, you are going to need it. There are a couple decent trails but don't look for something gnarly, but go looing for a good ride
Recommended Route: Near the top of Tolman Creek road, four corners, there is a trailhead, Cat Walk, after about a 1/4 mile the is a branch where you can continue, or take a left onto Marty's trail, a local rider and MTB entusiast, if you continue on cat walk you come out on toothpick which takes you to the Ashland loop road, from there you can take one of about 30 trails
Other recommended trails in the same area: Dark side of the moon, Alice in Wonderland, White Rabbit, VTR, Dan's trail, ect.

Summary: Burley ascent, about 3 mi.'s from where ever you start. Fire road gets boring - get a ride to the top if you can. A lot of short but sweet steep downhill rides such as, White Rabbit, Queen of Hearts...etc. all short trails (less than 3 mi.) Riding the whole loop can get boring due to the amount of fire road riding and the amount of braking on the downhill runs. Watch the granitic sand when going downhill, it is very slippery and unforgiving to people who ride the brake. You may not want to ride this if you dont like downhill or serious uphill because that is all that it is essentially. If you come from low elevation areas, I ride it for exercise but it is probably more fun to hike it.
Recommended Route: See others above.....
Other recommended trails in the same area: Taylor Creek, close to Grants Pass.fun.****
