Roman Nose State Park

Single track with lots of climbing (short and steep), fast flowing sections, technical downhill sections. Short loop of 3 miles through the valley to the lake, up the rockgarden (very rocky climb) onto the bluffs. Very good view of the lake on top of the bluff. Turn
onto steep straight hill, downhill, more bluff riding.
Steep technical downhill, fast section to valley, up out of the valley, up 'Shanes hill' to the fastest downhill to small bluff to trailhead. Longer loop starts around the lake of the dam to the rockgarden,
I would say 5 or so miles.
Can be ridden in both directions, both flow real well. Some steep climbs are
too steep for most people, some downhills too rocky with too much endo factor. When dry these trails are
awesome, when wet don't even think about riding them.
The mud is thick and sticks to everything. The bluff sections dry up real good, the valley however doesn't.
Best thing after riding is the burger and fries at the
general store. Good caping spots, poor facilities. Watonga doesn't have a bike store, it is 1.5 hours NW from OKC in the middle of nowhere. Best thing to do
is to camp out and do some night and day riding.
No current map of trails.
Watonga is 1.5 hours NW from OKC, several ways to get there. Once in Watonga turn North at trafic lights to Roman Nose State Park. Inside park keep on main road until intersection down a hill, go up hill towards stables and lake, pass the horse-stables. Park at the General Store near lake. Double track near parking lot marks the start of the trails.
Summary: Rode the trail the day of the canceled Broken Nose 50 race Sept 19, 2009. It's a shame the race was canceled because the trail had a lot of work done had been done to mow the upper terraces of the trail. The onset of rain really didn't effect the course too bad, like I thought it was going to be. This is still on of my favorite places to ride in Oklahoma. The trail's flow is the best in Oklahoma. Good climbing and fast descents - with a mix of desert and tree top canopy trail riding. Who could ask for more?
Recommended Route: Clockwise from the General Store to the boat ramp camping area, then to Inperation Point and beyond.

Summary: I can't believe there's no new reviews, trail was in great shape when we rode it a couple weeks ago. Fun, rocky, watch out for some small cactus' close to the trail. We make sure to get our "work route" get us into this area just for the ride.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Not in same area, but Ardmore is another fun technical trail that is a "must ride" if you're heading south on I-35 towards texas.

Summary: Roman Nose had a great year in 2006 and the 8-hour race, beat the trail into excellent shape.
I think this is my fav trail to ride in OK, it is so different from the others with the canyon views and the gypsum up on top- great flow and climbs that will challenge any rider.
2007 will bring two races out to RN and a 50 mile marathon race- solo and two man teams.
the OEF is working on 200' reroute early winter.

Summary: Good singletrack with some technical areas in canyon/mesa terrain. Mostly open, but some parts wooded. Not too big of climbs, but some will still get your heart rate up. Watch out for cactus-bring tubes and slime. All loops have something a little different. Trail was maintained and not overgrown like many other OK trails in summer. Good views of the lake. Trail signs could use some work.
Recommended Route: All.
Other recommended trails in the same area: 12 Miles of Hell

Summary: Pretty fun trail, rocky in some spots, tons of small cactus so ride Slime or tubeless. You lose cell reception @ 20 minutes to the park From I-40, however I have seen people successfully use them on the tops of the small hills within the park. Nice resturaunt open 9-8 everyday during camping season with resort at the trailhead by the tennis court (first right
at the pro golf shop when entering park).
Very quite place to camp and facilities are clean the majority of the time. The actual trail is about 1.5 hrs w/o stoping.
The bottom of the trail (Lakeshore loop) stays pretty wet most of the time being a few yards from the small lake. Bring spare parts if you plan on camping and riding it a couple of times no shop within an hour, at least.
Recommended Route: Exit 101 (281) or 108 (281 Spur), depending on direction your coming from stay on 281 until you hit Watonga. Go straight or north 281 turns into HWY 8 then make a right on 8-A you'll see a small park sign. to get to the trailhead make the first right after passing the Romannose sign right at th golf pro shop that road will take you to the resort (ok to park in) trailhead is by the tennins court.
Other recommended trails in the same area: None yet in the immediate area
