Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Cross Country Rider Summary: Technical. I have a new appreciation of this term after riding this trail. Difficult to keep momentum through many of the ascents due to all the rocks. At times seems more like a semi-bikeable hiking trail . Broke my chain (twice). Portaged a little but it was all well worth it. Some pretty cool creek crossings and brisk descents. A refreshing dose of danger. This trail forces you to hone your skills or suffer of which I did both. Watch out for cacti. Recommended Route: the yellow and white trails as posted on the signs at the 3 different trail entrances. Other recommended trails in the same area: 12 Miles of hell, Fort Sill OK

Weekend Warrior Summary: I like this trail, has just about everything. Climbs, drops, rocks, and downhill. The trail has been very well marked and has weedeated completely. Just needs more riders to use it. It is one of the better trails in SW Oklahoma but not well used or busy. You can ride it without seeing anyone. Recommended Route: From US62 north on 183 to through Snyder, through Mountain Park. Look for the second sign for Great Plains Park. Has 3 starts, the best is at behind the water tank. Other recommended trails in the same area: The new trail at Medicine Park, just east of Mt. Scott. Minnow Ranch and the 12 Miles at Fort Sill.

Cross Country Rider Summary: The almighty Steed is not at all what I expected. I've been riding since March and consider myself about an intermediate level rider and this trail beat the crap out of me. It's beyond me how people actually race this trail. I now hold those who do in the highest possible respects. It's a good distance at around 8 miles. It is well marked and of it is ridable if you can keep your crank arms, pedals, shoes, derailers, quick releases, chainstays, fork, handlebars, arms and legs from grabbing rocks and slinging you into a cactus. The rest of it is hike-n-bike unless you're a superhero. All together this trail will make you a better rider...but it will make your language horrible. Watch out for cacti and hiking Boy Scouts. To prepare for this trail, scatter a bunch of cinder blocks in your driveway and ride through and over them. Rescatter, rest and repeat. I'm giving Steed five peppers for showing me how much practice I still need. Recommended Route: For beginners I don't recommend it at all. For the rest of you find a place where the trail comes out at the road...then follow the arrows. Other recommended trails in the same area: I hear 12 miles of hell is good.

Cross Country Rider Summary: This trail will put you in your place. I've only been riding for six months or so and thought I could handle the almighty Steed. I probably managed to ride maybe two thirds of it but had to hike-n-bike the rest of the way. I wasn't aware that Oklahoma had that much rock concentrated in one area. I didn't break anything but somehow managed to loosen up both of my crank arms and I have never felt my SID flex like it did that day. I honestly didn't like my first experience with Tom Steed...but I'm not going to penalize the trail because I suck. Five chili's to the almight Steed for kicking my butt. Recommended Route: Fall...get back up...fall...get back up...indo...get back up...fall...get back up...fall...break your chain...fix it...get back up...indo...get back up...fall...get back up...get a flat from cactus...fall...change tube...get back up... Other recommended trails in the same area: I've heard 12 miles of hell is fun...

Ridden Trail: Every few months

Downhiller Summary: By far one of my favorite trails. I love fast and extreme downhills but for a slow trail I love this place! Lot's of technical stuff to ride, actually about 90% technical but if you've got some skills you can ride just about anything on this trail. I got 1st place last fall riding the Tom Steed race and I owe it all to knowing the trail so if you plan to race you definately need to get some practice out there! This trail is around 8 miles and definately worth driving too. Recommended Route: Go 25 minutes west from Lawton to Snyder, then 10 minutes north to the park which is on the left of the highway. Other recommended trails in the same area: 12 miles of hell, medicine park
