Cuyahoga Valley Towpath Trail

A never ending path made of crushed limestone. Obstacles include hikers, jogging strollers, old people who insist walking down the middle of the path blocking both lanes of traffic, Trail Blazers (pseudo-rangers on bikes who will stop you if your riding to fast), and general slow Sunday bikers on Huffies

Summary:
good and long with very few stops for car traffic. I use it to commute to work in the summer and is nicly paved from rockside rd and north. it gets pretty bad at the end as you begin to smell the polution coming from the steel mills. this is a easy ride and you can take less experienced riders for a safe confidence builder or a little exercise

Recommended Route:
on weekdays park under the 480 bridge and head towards cleveland its all paved and you may see 2 other people the whole time, its only 4-5 miles but you can do it a few times for a good work out with no interuptions and no cross auto traffic. a few turns and a little hill or 2 is all.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
there is a short mtb path in the same area and the hike and bike trail is ok if you like the power lines

Summary:
Lets call it what it is. A scenic, flat, safe (relatively), limestone covered route. Great for long training rides. I've got over 2,800 miles on the Path. Where else can you get that kind of cycling for a $5 annual donation.

Sure I've think i've seen it all; smokers, unleased dogs, unfettered kids. Lat night there were 2 guys whos stopped there bikes right in the middle of the path to lookaround ....shhhesh.And even 2 a**holes walking in the middle who refused to move despite all the appropriate warnings. On the way back they got a handle bar in the back ...ooops. If you don't want to deal with the "Attack of the Path People" go early. Get up early ride out the Fishers have breakfast and head back. Or avoid the most popular trail head (Peninsula) there are plenty of miles between traiheads. Or head North, doesn't seem as poulated.

I think it's a great resource

Recommended Route:
Go from 49th and Harvard to Botzum road and back. Fifty + miles and only a handful of roads to worry about. Stop at the Winkin Lizard for some refueling!

Summary:
The Towpath is not a path for a workout, either technical nor speed. It is a Multi-Use Path (MUP) and has alot of pedistrian and casual bike traffic. The path is very flat and stright which is ideal for a canal which was its original design. The number of families on the trail means you need to keep your speeds down. During off times or questionable weather there are openings so you can pick up the pace just make sure you slow down to pass other users.
The advantages of this trail are the length, location and scenery. It really is a nice family ride.
In summary enjoy the trail for its intended use as a casual ride, but don't expect any kind of workout.

Summary:
I ride this trial atleast 3 times a week in high summer sometimes up to 5. I think its funny how this trail is being rated. I use it for several reasons. Its a solid 54 miles and ive done it dozens and dozens of times. I can compare my times and see where i stand and how much I need to improve for one thing. I am not from ohio orig but NC. And the bad roads in cleveland from months of snow and ice are not 700x23 freindly. And I bought my MTB for this reason and ride it alot more than my road bike now sadly for me. As far as trail behavior of the patrons, Yes it can be annoying. But you have to remember these people dont know or really care about our plightas serious or avid cyclist. I have ridden past people who told me to slow down or have yelled other non polite things. I think to myself why should I ride in the grass for you when you could move over, I mean you would think people would follow the same rules on the trail as they do the road but they dont. And for the little kids weaving around like that, I am also a parent and that is no fault of the kids its bad relucatant parenting, it is probably the only time the kids get out so i dont look down on the kids but the parents. There are thousands of people out on that trail a week. No one is going to edjucate them on anything or what is appropriate. And if a cyclist goes plowing into them at 25 mph its gonna be the cyclist who is blammed. Some people you cant reason with and there is no point to even bother. When you get down below penisula you have more serious riders on and less oblivious familes. But its thier trail too and if you want 50 some miles of pretty scenary insted of 2 hours riding indoors or not riding at all I think its great and well worth it. I personally love the trial despite all the obvious annoying things about it. I also recommend being careful around horses. If they get spooked they will throw thier riders and thats not fun or have them roll over on you also. Its not a cycling only trail its for lots of differnt things for lots of differnt people that is the one thing to keep in mind. I just try to be polite, ill tap my brakes or say "comming through" and 99% of the time they quickly and politly let you through, I think i ran in to a couple of jerks but thats life. I guess if you dont have much pateints then this isnt for you. If your a road rider who has a MTB like me and want to get in 3 or 4 hours of riding its great. If you are MTB only you will hate it, plain and simple. When i moved to ohio 2 1/2 years ago i didnt think its was so pretty being I rode in the blue ridge mountians and the foothills in winston salem where I am from..but this trial changed my mind and Im sure there are other pretty places too.
