Bennett Creek Trail

The trailhead has an outhouse, a pump, and a message board. Check with the US Forest Service for camping info.
The Bennett Creek Trail connects to the Maah Daah Hey at a point about 16 miles north of Magpie Road (Devils Pass) and 22 miles south of the CCC Campground. It is the quickest way to get to the China Wall on the Maah Daah Hey. The trail is marked by the 4x4 wooden post markers with the Bennett Creek Goat Head symbol on them. The top of the post slants down on the side that the trail is located.
The trail starts in the trees next to Bennett Creek and is beautifully draped along the hills and ravines, with nice doses of scrubland thrown in. Scenery is abundant, and the trail is fairly well marked. Length is short, but a necessary way to get to the Maah Daah Hey.
From Medora, go east on I-94 to Belfield, then north on Hwy.85 approx. 45 miles until you see the sign for Bennett Camp. Go west on the gravel road approx. 5 miles until the road curves sharply right (north). At this intersection there is a gate and a gravel road that turns left (south). Follow this road south approximately 2 miles, down into the valley, where it dead ends into the Bennett Camp Trailhead.
Summary: Yes Virginia there is single track in North Dakota. The Badlands offer the best riding in the entire state.
This is really a connecter to the Maah Daah Hey trail. It is not too long in and of itself, but it does connect to the MDH. I highly recomend heading north (right) towards the Teddy Roosevelt National Park. This will connect you with China Wall. Great riding on that portion of the MDH.
Recommended Route: Follow the posts marking the trail. They are spaced in such a way that you should always be able to see one from the next. Be careful crossing the creek near the trail head. There are many cow paths that could lure you off course.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Maah Daah Hey, You could head north on 85 towards the North Unit of the Teddy Roosevelt National Park and turn into the CCC camp to get to the northenmost trailhead of the MDH. This will start you in the Little Missouri River vally and let you climb out until you hit the park boundry. I have heard roumors that a bypass trail is in the works to allow MTnbikers to ride the full length of the MDH trail without having to shuttle.

Summary: We rode this in mid September. Daytime temps were still in the 80s, and fall colors had started in the trees. The trail was only cut last fall, so some sections of the trail surface are a bit rough. Length was short, but fun. We used this trail as a way to get to China Wall on the Maah Daah Hey. To do so, take Bennett Creek Trail from the trailhead to the Maah Daah Hey intersection, then go north (right) on the MDH to China Wall. 4 stars because it's new and sections need to be smoothed out.
Recommended Route: As above
