from fs-982 take chesnut mtn rd towards brown mountain. trail is singletrack on the right. really, really great trail. almost 100% singletrack. this trail starts with a super steep goat trail hike a bike section and turns to singletrack similar to that found on beehive. there is one more steep hike a bike section, then ripping singletrack. it dumps out near the concrete bridge on fs-982. watch out for the sinkhole!!!

Summary:
We do this as last 'reward section' of a half-day ride that begins at top of Gingercake Acres. Every bit of this trail is ridable - no radical skills required; just guts. Prior knowledge/awareness is a MUST because the penalty for a mishap in several spots is SEVERE. (and this ain't a place that affords easy rescue or body retrieval) But if you know what you're up against, then you're in for some real fun.
WARNING - the equistrians have recently found this trail, so several of the sections are pretty torn up and loose - making them very sketchy. Plus, you are riding the MST fro good portion - so look for hikers (And BE NICE!)

Recommended Route:
Park off H181 @2mi down FR982, shuttle up 181, Gingercake to Table Rock rd. Once turn gravel, park at FIRST trailhead on LEFT. This 'Raspberry Ridge'. GAME ON! Jump. bump. Rattle and Roll! @3/4 mile look for HARD LEFT. Big sweeping berms, then hard drop to creek and down to FR496. Left up 1 mi & cross H181. DOWN GREENTOWN. YEEHAW! follow WHITE blazes to Harpers Creek, (2 creek ports) then RIGHT and follow Orange blazes to Brown Mtn Beach Rd. RIGHT on BMB past visitor's center to RIGHT on FR1336. 4 mile gravel climb to LEFT on FR#? - Chestnut Mt. Climb more and just when climb over and start to drop LOOK for trail up RIGHT (NOT MARKED!) Granny and grind for 2 pitches to top of ridge. Few miles more ups-n-downs. THE SINKHOLE will come up on you outta nowhere - it's @6' gap/hole that can be jumped. HARD LEFT down STEEEEP face into Holly Springs. Watch out for steep drop on left. Once turns bend right can let go for awhile and enjoy Pisgah! BEWARE there is a double rock drop hard to see, can roll it right (or can faceplant, flip, etc like me). Just before creek, hard RIGHT up and few hundred techi yards to creek/FR982 shuttle park.

Summary:
This trail provides more opportunities to bust your @ss than any I know of. Tough uphills, tough downhills. Cool stuff to ride over. Props to whoever rides down that steep hill and jumps up on that log. The run on the cliff face is pretty exciting.

Recommended Route:
Mortimer-Piedmont-->Little Chestnut, bust a right at the blazed trail and follow it. There are turns but the blaze is pretty good throughout.

Summary:
i would say this is a relatively tough trail. climb the goat trail, descend and ride twisty singletrack. do your best to climb the steep run-up section. descend some more. watch out for the sinkhole. turn left, stay over the back wheel, now start the good stuff. walk a little or ride if you got the skills the last quarter mile of the trail. cross the creek, you're back on fs-982.

Recommended Route:
riding away from nc-181, travel on fs-982. turn right onto the second forest service road. its called chesnut mountain road. there should be a white gate here. travel approx. one mile, singletrack starts on the right. have fun.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
greentown, raspberry, beehive, raider camp, lettered rock (oh yeah steepy steep), harper creek trail, headleys ridge, etc. the wilson's trails rule.
